THE STUDY OF LIFE GENERAL BIOLOGY The first form of life on Earth are thought to have been microorganism that existed for billions of years in the ocean before plants and animals appeared. WHAT IS BIOLOGY? In simple terms, biology is the study of living organisms and their interactions with one another and their environments. Biologists may study anything from the microscopic or sub microscopic view of a cell to ecosystems and the whole living planet. Formerly called bluegreen algae, these cyanobacteria are some of the Earth’s oldest life forms. These stromatolites along the shores of lake formed by the layering of cyanobacteria. NATURAL SCIENCES What would you expect to see in a museum of natural sciences? NATURAL SCIENCES the branch of knowledge that deals with the study of the physical world. Astronomy, biology, chemistry, earth science, and physics Life science, physical science TWO TYPES OF SCIENCE: BASIC SCIENCE AND APPLIED SCIENCE Basic science, or “pure” science, seeks to expand knowledge regardless of the short-term application of that knowledge. Applied science, or “technology”, aims to use science to solve the real-world problems, making it possible. BRANCHES OF BIOLOGICAL STUDY Biology is very broad and includes many branches and subdisciplines. 1. Molecular biology 2. Microbiology 3. Neurobiology 4. Zoology 5. Botany THEMES AND CONCEPTS IN BIOLOGY All organisms share several key characteristics or functions: 1. Order 2. Sensitivity or Response to Stimuli 3. Reproduction 4. Growth and Development 5. Regulation 6. Homeostasis 7. Energy Processing Living things are highly organized parts of a hierarchy. 1. Atom 8. Population 2. Molecules 9. Communities 3. Cells 10. Ecosystem 4. Tissues 11. Biosphere (Earth) 5. Organ 6. Organ System 7. Organisms Compare and contrast basic and applied science using a Venn diagram. (15 points) Basic Science Applied Science B.
