In comparison to analytic solutions, numerical methods allow you to solve
problems quickly and easily. There are numerous resources available to simplify the
solution of what can be a difficult problem, whether the target is integration or the solution
of complex differential equations. simple algebra to analytical math.
Most of the common applications of numerical methods are used in the
engineering field. First, numerical methods can be used in traffic engineering to analyze
and have proper calculation for the traffic flows. Whereas, equations were made
depending on the road features to have a smoother entrance and exit of vehicles. Also,
this could be applied in chemical engineering to balance chemical equations and electrical
engineering to solve a certain value in a circuit, where there are systems of equations to
be solved.
Another is its application in civil engineering where different materials we used in
our daily life like glass, woods, metals, and concretes are being studied. As a result, the
alteration of materials and the prediction of their properties are critical goals for
manufacturers. Engineers in industry, among other things, are very interested in the
elastic behavior or loading ability of materials in order to manufacture high-quality
materials. Thus, for the quantitative description of changes in material properties due to
external factors, a mathematical model is needed. The concepts of differential equations
come in handy as a useful tool for developing such a model.
Lastly, numerical methods could be applied in the petroleum engineering field
where engineers can use numerical methods to predict the behavior of the hydrocarbons
or to have an easier method for the enhanced oil recovery. In which, integration is used
to calculate the region under the rate-time curve when estimating incremental oil from an
enhanced oil recovery method. Various methods have been used in the industry over the
years, ranging from the use of templates to graphical procedures. Thus, applying
numerical methods in petroleum engineering may open new techniques and calculations
to get more hydrocarbons.
