Question 2
Read the following text. Then, answer questions (a) – (j).
Charity shops not only offer a variety of items, but also help you give back to the
community. People go to charity shops for various reasons but most would agree that the top
reasons people buy goods at charity shops are as follows.
The main reason has to be the affordable prices of the goods. Charity shops are popular
because they offer customers great value for money. The goods sold may not be new but they are
of good quality. At low prices and good quality, charity shops make shopping more affordable.
Chooseing to spend your money at charity shops also gives you a good feeling. Your money
is being put to good use; you get the items you want and part of the money you spent is used to
help others.
You never know what you may find at a charity shop. However, you can be sure that you
will not find any clothing item usually found in a department store. Therefore, if you want to be
original, shop at a charity shop.
Instead of buying completely new items, you can buy as-good-as-new items from charity
shops. You can save money because these items are usually sold at half price. You also help to
reduce wastage when you shop at a charity store. Many people would rather sell or donate their
belongings to charity shops instead of throwing them out.
Charity shops have a large amount of merchandise too. Some may only sell clothing. Others
are bigger stores and are part of a well-known chain of charity shops so they have a variety of
items on sale. These charity shops sell new items which have been donated by big department
stores. Some even sell vintage items such as clothing or CD which are not sold anywhere else.
Therefore, you will get a unique collection of items on sale.

Question 4
Read the text below and answer the questions that follow.
Tim Watson, a California bus driver was driving halfway through his usual bus route
when he received a local alert from the Valley Transportation Authority across his dashboard
screen. A little boy was kidnapped in Milpitas, and the alert asked drivers to be on the lookout for
him.
The victim was a three-year-old boy wearing plaid shirt and red shoes. The suspect was a
man in his 20s, wearing a black hooded sweatshirt and carrying a brown knapsack. Upon reading
that, Tim felt his heart skip a beat because he remembered that a man with a boy had just boarded
his bus ten minutes earlier. It was the boy’s plaid shirt that made Tim remember him.
Tim glanced in the mirror and saw both the boy and the man sitting at the back of the bus
which was almost empty at that time. Before making any drastic action, he wanted to confirm it
was indeed them. He pulled over at the nearest gas station and announced that he needed to look
for a lost bag. Tim pretended to look and peered under each seat. As he bent down at their seats,
Tim saw the boy’s red shoes. He then was sure it was indeed them but knew he had to keep it
cool. He apologized for the delay and continued driving.
Trying not to arouse suspicion, he waited for ten minutes before informing the bus
dispatcher. Keeping his voice low, he told the operator, “I believe I have the kidnapping suspect
on my bus.” The dispatcher then instructed him to drive to the last stop of his route, where the
police would be waiting. As he continued driving, Tim’s heart thumped so hard, and the
remaining 10-minute journey was the longest 10 minutes of his life. Just as he was worrying what
would happen if he arrived before the police, Tim saw from his side mirrors that police cruisers
were following behind the bus silently but with red lights flashing. The bus does not have a back
window, so the suspect was not aware that the police was already here.
Four coups were already waiting for the suspect with their hands on their holsters. As the
man got off the bus with the boy, one officer grabbed the child out of his arm, threw the suspect to
the ground, and handcuffed him behind his back. After the whole fiasco was over, the police
officers told Tim that about an hour earlier, the man, Alfonso Edington, 23, had snatched the boy
from the Milpitas Library after he wandered away from his mother. Tim thought of his own sons,
aged 17 and 21, and felt the misery the boy’s parents would feel if they were to never see him
again.
A few weeks later, Tim received a certificate of recognition for his extraordinary and
heroic act. Yet, he remained humble about his action. “I try to teach my kids to look out for people
who can’t defend themselves, and that’s what I did,” he said.
