CELT-S Module 2 – Portfolio task Module 2 – Language learning and the teenage learner Portfolio task – Plan, teach and evaluate questions for a vocabulary activity Task focus – Using different types of questions to engage teenage learners: questions for the lead-in stage to involve learners, questions to check learners’ understanding, questions about language and questions to find out learners’ preferences and opinions Procedure Review the content of Module 2 Lesson 3 on using questions to improve learning. You can do this by: o Going back and looking again at some sections in the lesson in the online module. o Reading your own notes. o Talking to other teachers. o Doing some more reading or research. Select a section from your coursebook which focuses on vocabulary. Plan a lesson which includes the vocabulary activity you have chosen from your coursebook (remember to think about interaction patterns for each stage): o Prepare a lead-in using questions to involve learners in the topic of the vocabulary. o Plan how you will teach the vocabulary and prepare questions to check understanding of the meaning of the vocabulary and questions about language. o Prepare an activity for learners to practise the vocabulary and prepare questions to check that learners understand the instructions for the activity. o Plan how you will provide feedback to the whole class and prepare questions to ask learners about their preferences and opinions. Complete Part 1 of the Portfolio task template: o Provide details of the vocabulary activity and your class. o Write the procedures you will follow for each stage. o Write the questions you will ask in the whole-class stages: the lead-in stage, the teach-vocabulary stage, the set-up-practice-activity stage and the whole-classfeedback stage. o Complete the interaction patterns template to show how learners will work at each stage. Teach your lesson and reflect on it, then complete Part 2 of the Portfolio task template. This includes your reflections on your use of questions in lessons, action points for improving your use of questions in future lessons and a checklist of evidence you need to submit. Upload: o The section which focuses on vocabulary you chose from the coursebook. o Any additional tasks/materials you used in the lesson e.g. visuals, the practice activity. o The completed Portfolio task template.
