What does it mean to be a Pacific Islander today and in the future? The Pacific Islands are the islands of the Pacific Ocean. “Three major groups of islands in the Pacific Ocean are Polynesia, Micronesia and Melanesia.” (J James) According to the researches we all were hunters and gathers from the beginning of the human life. People moved from countries to countries in search for a better place to live in, thus this evidence is supported by the Lapita pottery. Pacific island now is mixed with multicultural people, and all are referred to as one “Fijians”. Being in pacific island today no one has forgotten the history, there is different holiday and Girmit days and other cultural festival still practiced in pacific island countries together with harmony. The history of migration in the pacific was well identified by the Lapita pottery. “Lapita pottery gives evidence that people were travelling from places to places in search for a suitable place to live in, thus the archaeologist and scientist by using the Lapita pottery found out the migration pattern in the south pacific.” (Bedford, S. (2015). Living in pacific island, surrounded by beautiful white sandy beaches is a place to be, pacific island countries are free from terrorist activities unlike other countries whereby innocent civilian are injured in bombing and gun fires. Being in pacific island is truly a gift, However with such beauty of pacific there are some devastating problems as well. Pacific island countries are targets for tropical cyclone year by year. There are also environmental threats to the pacific regions as well. Some of the threats are improper garbage disposal which tends to damage marine life. However the Fiji government is trying their best to overcome from this problem. Bleaching of coral and some of the tropical diseases are also a problem to the pacific as well. In the coming years there would be pollution free pacific as the government has placed a vat on plastic bags which leads to lesser use of plastic bags thus less pollution. There is a positive future ahead in pacific as the government is doing their best in ways to overcome from problems in their power. Climate change is also a problem in Pacific Islander’s life. Pacific islands are surrounded by oceans whereby due to climate change sea level rise is a problem in Pacific Islander’s life. Homes are damaged and people are forced to leave their home in live on high grounds for survival. However, climate change is a global problem as well. We should reduce fossil fuel and practice reforestation to minimise such problem so that the future of pacific island is safe. To conclude, being a pacific islander is truly a gift as pacific island countries do not engage in terrorist activities as other countries have been affected by bombing and nuclear explosion. Pacific islanders also celebrate multicultural activities and live in peace with one other and are referred to as “one” Fijian. There is also a bright future ahead in Pacific Islander’s life as because there is being so much development taking place. Bibliography Bedford, S.
