The Longest Bridge – A Problem Solving Activity OBJECTIVE: Each student (or a pair of students) is to build the longest non–supported single span bridge that can be made using only a single sheet of printer paper and 30 cm of masking tape. Tape may not attach the bridge to the table. A Hot Wheels car must be able to travel underneath the measured span. The teacher will measure the span from the inside of the supporting column. MATERIALS: -­‐1 sheet of printer paper -­‐30 cm of masking tape -­‐Scissors PLANNING: Sketch 2 different ideas you might use to build your bridge. BUILD: Build your bridge. COLLECT DATA: Measure and record the length of the longest single span in your bridge. ___________________________cm Record your result on the Summa Span length list posted in your classroom. ANALYSIS: Describe any observations and what you learned during the lab.
