ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to those who help me to complete my English
Language (SBA). I would also like to thank my classmates for their assistance and my
teacher Ms. Johnson Trisan for her Guidance throughout the SBA.
INTRODUCTION
This is my English Language School Based Assessment that will review my topic\theme on
“Single Parenting\Struggles of Single Mothers”. This assessment includes the three
artifacts that the researcher chose to investigate on his topic, a Plan of Investigation,
Reflections 1-3, Oral Presentation, and a Written Report. These methods are to ensure that the
SBA is explained through source documents and the process and procedure in which this
assignment was completed.
PLAN OF INVESTIGATION
I have chosen this topic because I've acknowledged the fact that raising a child is quite
difficult in my society and I want to educate single parents about ways of coping with
parental challenges. I have noticed how it has impacted the lives of several females in
my family and I would like to encourage them to continue being a great parent amidst
the problems. I also would like to be more understanding when it comes to topical
issues like this.
Engaging in this research will be most beneficial to me because as an English student
I aim to improve my vocabulary and communicate more effectively
.
I intend to gather information for my topic by consulting a variety of sources for
meaningful information. I will browse the internet for articles that will support my
topic and videos that can be used to give an illustration/representation
of my topic. All these artifacts will help to bring my research to life.
As a Language student, I am aiming to improve in all areas of the English
Language, such as reading, speaking and writing . I intend to use Critical thinking
skills, Paragraph writing and analysis.
Artifact #1
This article describes the daily challenges of a single mother with quadruplets who gets very
little support from the father of her children or from social development. It entails the
struggles the single mother endures as she tries taking care of her quadruplets as she lives in a
pale blue house that has nothing except a rusty broken fence outside to distinguish it from
the row of corrugated-roofed houses in her neighborhood. Young (Lindi Midlull) struggles to
carry two babies, one on each hip, while two more clutch to her legs as she moves through a
cramped house. There's only two bedrooms, each with double beds that have only (14) people
living inside the house. She lives with her mother, four sisters and her four sibling’s children.
All of the children are easily prone to sickness and medical bills are often expensive when
they fall ill. Lindi also has a son that's four years old. The father of her quadruplets works in
a store and says that, “he doesn't want anything to do with the babies”. Lindi receives a
social grant of some money for her four children and states that, “At least we groceries now
for the last two weeks, all we've been eating is porridge and sugar and that family bills are
very expensive.
Artifacts #2
I sit and look out upon the life of a single parent
I hear the single mother's selfless cries of loneliness for her child in the still
darkness of the night
I see the mother awaking her child with a playful game of peek-a-boo with a smile
as warm and bright as the afternoon sun at its apex of the day
I mark the loving kindness she expresses toward her son even with the all the trials
and tribulations this world puts upon her
I observe the mother getting herself ready for work with the misgivings of the
coming day (where are my socks, did I already put salt in the eggs, where did I put
my keys)
I observe the quiet darkness of the child's bedroom with the mother sitting on the
bed with a Bible in hand telling her child of all the wonderful things of God's love
then kissing him good night
All these things are things a mother has to do to help her child grow
See, hear, and be not afraid you can succeed with God's help

REFLECTION 1
The three artifacts that I have chosen contain pertinent information on single parenting and
the struggles they faced and speaks of the nature of a single parent, in some ways, much more
loudly than words.
The first piece of artifact is in the form of an Image found in the Newspaper, showing a
young black female who seemingly holds two out of her four identical babies. Knowing how
this single mother struggles to carry two of her babies on each of her hip, while the other two
clutch on to legs as she moves through a cramped house or how the father of the four babies
won't take the on responsibility to be their father, greatly stirred up different emotions in me
the sense of dread which I felt as an observer and researcher reflects a sense of disquietude
and is strikingly terrifying forcing me to see and feel to a lesser extent and becoming a better
person one day.
The poem by Tiana S. Winston speaks of how the single parent tends to care for the child
through the struggles and tells how lonely and suspenseful single parenting can be and of
what to expect. She states that the“single mother’s selfless cries of loneliness for her child in
the still darkness of the night” tells how tirelessly a single mother’s work to provide for her
son. No Woman should endure such suffering.
My final piece of artifact is a youtube video that shows a mother explaining the challenges
she encounters. A list was given stating how hard single mothers work to ensure that their
children aren't affected by the failing presence of a father. If further emphasized that either
mother or father can adopt the role of both parents, however it comes with hard work and
dedication.
REFLECTION 2
In the first artifact, the writer used imagery to ensure the audience have a visual
representation of the trials and tribulation that single mothers faced on their own. The image
gave a better overview to the background of my topic.
The poem by Tiana S.Winston, spoke of the hardship a .The poem is written in a formal
language to graviates to all audiences. The poem uses literary devices such as metaphor and
simile to compare the constant battle of hardship that single mothers have to endure. An
example of metaphor in this poem when the poet said “selfless cries of loneliness for her
child in the still darkness of the night”.
The last piece of artifacts uses the formal language. The reporter also used the informative
speech to create harmony and clarity among the audience. The language depicts logical
organization and understandable word choices.
REFLECTION 3
The process of completing this SBA has impacted me positively, I must confess that working
on this SBA, specifically on my topic single - parenting, has made me aware of how truly
depressed i was of the extent to which this parental struggle of bearing a child on their own
has negatively impacted the lives of these individuals. My attitude of indifference towards
those who have had to endure such suffering has been replaced with a greater sense of
concern, care and it has brought me much closer to the situation.
However after engaging this SBA taught me to always pay my respect towards female
individuals since most single parents are female individuals. It has also improved my
vocabulary and am now sociable to have conversation with people and I learned how to
structure my sentences properly. It has helped me gain more knowledge in English.
Oral Presentation Plan
My Oral Presentation is on the topic of Single parenting. My presentation will be in the form
of a poem and the reason why I choose this genre is because I enjoy poetry and I noticed in
my community how the effects of single parenting has on their child and the topic is quite
personal to me since most single parents in my household are female individuals. I will use
formal techniques because it suits the fluency of my poem.
Oral Presentation
She sacrifice her life for love,
Not for the love of a man but the love of a child,
She gave up all nights of acting wild,
She walk countless miles,
And she washed endless piles,
She would protect us from the monsters under our beds,
She stood up to anyone who tried to put nonsense in our heads
,
She always say five more minutes and it time for bed,
Yet she let us slide when we pleaded and beg to stay up and watch cartoon,
While she read,
She sometimes would have an hectic day,
Novel that make her dream of personal day,
Having drinks at the beach or cooking for us on a sunday,
But she choose to stay, stay home and play,
Our little sinonigan always made her day,
She would hide the stress that we knew nth about,
Bills on the table getting thrown to the floor while we stand and pout,
With a little time, she would stop and pray,
For life been anything but calm,
Since you ve been call my mom,
Ye she sacrifice her life for love,
Not the love of a man but the love of a child,

GROUP WRITTEN REPORT
For this research we were assisted by our teacher, who guided us by explaining the different
components of the English School Based Assessment. We selected our group members and
started discussions on the assessment. We selected our theme and sub topic and once this
entire plan was in place, we had to do our individual work.
Each member of the group had to gather evidence for the topic chosen. Research of this
project was mainly accomplished through surfing the internet and newspapers.
We assisted each other by sharing ideas, researching and editing. The group members met
once per week to review the SBA and make additions and edits. The articles gathered were
easy to analyse and it was easy to grasp the concept of the articles.
We analyzed our work by choosing which artifacts were the most suitable to our topics. This
was not very challenging as we started early so we had a lot of time to complete the SBA. In
the end we were satisfied with the pieces selected, as they were suitable for our separate
topics and had a lot of information.
This research on the topic of drug abuse and its effects, has broadened our scope; as we learnt
not to judge drug addicts, as they use these substances to cope with various personal
issues. We chose to stick with this topic as teens in today’s society have been greatly affected
by this social issue, either by ending up in fiscal distress, and even ending up having their
educational development crippled as a result of this addiction. We believe that through this
investigation we would both prevent ourselves from becoming victims as well as have more
compassion for persons who are struggling with this issue. The information from this
research will also help us to spread the information to others and bring awareness to this
issue.
This SBA helped us as a group as we now know the benefits of working in a group, we learnt
to get along with others and the meaning of teamwork. Working in the group also helped to
foster our creativity and learning and also harmonized our strengths.
We are of the belief that the outcome of the research had a positive impact on each member
as it sharpened our grammar; writing and reading and comprehension skills.
