LEARNING COMPETENCY -Listening Comprehension (LC)
Infer thoughts and feelings expressed in the text listened EN7LC-II-i-6.2:
MATERIAL
Film Viewing Film viewing plays an important role on students' listening comprehension
as well as possessing an informed knowledge by developing something that captured different
thoughts or ideas. This material really makes sense in the field of learning process. This time,
students will have a film viewing in line with the topic of figure of speech that shows contrast
which is irony, oxymoron and paradox. Each film to be presented has its own relevance to the
topic. A teacher compiled three different short films that have irony, oxymoron and paradox.
Highlighted part was the most important of the film when characters say something that shows
contradictory during their conversation. The chosen film that has irony is the Frozen, also in
oxymoron is the film about True Lies, and paradox film is all about The Terminator. Through
these films, students should listen carefully as they will have an interactive communication on
what they have understand.
RATIONALE FOR DEVELOPING MATERIALS
This material will able to help students to widen their ideas, develop their critical
thinking, to analyse and achieve learning outcomes that is being expected. Moreover, it
enhances the level of listening comprehension. As we all know that film viewing is the best way
to attract the attention and interest of the viewers that's why this is very important to develop
more learning that can be used in the future. Nevertheless, we know that, to sharpen their
critical thinking is the main target if they really understand the topic by the use of clear and
explicit presentation of the given material. It is actually common but we know that it is one of
the best way to make the lesson proper meaningful and understandable. Film viewing that is
being presented will serve as a guide to the learners to easily determine which is irony,
oxymoron and paradox on the film that is given. Indeed, the purpose of this material is to look
who is listening and not because learners are tested if they really understand the topic.
PRINCIPLES OF MATERIALS DEVELOPMENT APPLIED
Principle of Language Acquisition 3 (Language learners who achieve positive affect are much
more likely to achieve communicative competence than those who do not) In this part, the
presentation of the material is interesting, relevant and enjoyable that will gain a positive
impact on the learners’ listening comprehension and attention.
It stimulates emotive responses through the use of the film that will be presented in the
class. This principle, learners can articulate their feelings about the content of the chosen film
before asking them to analyse it. This material also contains the development of sense of
listening comprehension because the film itself could able to get important learning and for
participation purposes during the discussion. In addition, it develops also eye movements but it
depends on how integral and interesting the topic was because as we all know that if the film
wasn't interesting, students couldn't pay attention. But if the teacher says that, listen carefully
because later we will going to discuss what is the main focus of the film. This will help students
to take efforts with the use of listening understanding and analysing.
WHEN AND HOW TO USE THE MATERIAL
This material is use during the discussion or lesson proper where the students should
participate and have a collaborative learning process in order to achieve the objectives.
Questions will also be given during the discussion where teacher will determine if they
understand what is being presented. To use the material, teacher will discuss first the types of
figure of speech that show contrast and its definition with examples to helps students to
understand and gain ideas before conducting the film viewing. After a short discussion, a
teacher will present the film and students will listen carefully, jot notes and be focused so that
they can gain ample learning for the given topic. After the viewing, the teacher will start to
explain what the content of each film are. This time, interaction between the teacher and
students will happen since discussion needs also the opinion or ideas from the students to
elaborate in the class. Thus, learners should participate by providing their ideas to gain extra
points.
LEARNING COMPETENCY (writing and composition)
Simplify Ideas (EN7WC-II-i-5.3)
MATERIALS: VISUAL SYMBOL (Poster)
Poster is a combination of bold design and color primarily intended to catch the
attention on a significant fact, idea or message. This material is chosen to use during the
evaluation to assess the learners if they understand what is being taught by the teacher. This
material will help the learner visualize the lesson for better understanding. These materials are
composed of printed posters with different scenarios and each one of them describes the figure
of speech (irony, oxymoron, paradox) and explains it comprehensively. These materials are
helpful for teachers and learners as well as to be able to achieve its objective with its intended
learning outcomes.
RATIONALE FOR DEVELOPING MATERIALS:
These materials aim to help learners’ educational needs to maximize the success of
educational objectives and outcomes. This will significantly increase learners' achievement by
allowing them to explore their knowledge independently. It is useful to assess if the learners
understand the topic given nor needed a thorough explanation. Through this materials learners
are able to use their cognitive, analytical, and creativity to compose their knowledge through
writing their thoughts and opinions regarding to the topic given. In addition they will write what
they have learned during the discussion. This material is essential in class during the evaluation
where the learners’ learning is being tested with their capability to use their creativity when it
comes to writing and the way they think – analytical. The materials presented during their
evaluation will caters learners ability to identify the different figure of speech namely irony,
oxymoron, and paradox. These three figures of speech will enable their analytical skills to
explain their differences without deviation. Posters posted can help them motivate and focus to
the specific field. Through the use of these materials the learners can learn on a detailed topic.
They are convenient for both learners and teachers.
PRINCIPLES OF DEVELOPING MATERIALS
Principle of Language Acquisition 2 which intended for the learners to maximize their
exposure to language in use, they need to engage both affectively and cognitively in the
language experience.
Through this material in evaluation will maximize learners’ learning during the
discussion presented by the teacher. Identify by using a poster can definitely help the learners
to use their critical and analytical thinking. On the basis of this material as one of their activities
it will allow the learners involved in the given task and provide them opportunities to learn and
to acquire new knowledge. As stated on the rationale, they are expected to identify the
difference of the task given and are expected to perform the task comprehensively. As a result,
on the teachers end, they must provide all the appropriate needs for the topic to be absorbed
by the learners in order for them to answer the task given during evaluation.
WHEN AND HOW TO USE THE MATERIAL
This material is intended to use in evaluation after the presentation of the lesson where
the students are expected to perform the given task to assess their learning about the topic
given. In this activity there are three posters presented with different scenarios which will allow
the teacher to evaluate the learners if they totally get the discussion. The learners are going to
identify in accordance to the different figure of speech (irony, oxymoron, paradox) and explain
it based on their own understanding and their analytical analysis. Without any exclusion, all the
learners are expected to participate in the given task.
LEARNING COMPENTECY: Vocabulary
V- EN7V-II-h-10.1.3: Identify figures of speech that show contrast (irony,
oxymoron, paradox)
Materials
Students must to know first the definition of each term and its differences by identifying
each one of them through learning materials such as showing visual product in a short clip or
orally discuss by the teacher. Irony, oxymoron and paradox are parts of speech that have
different characteristics. These literary devices can be found in literary pieces such us in stories,
poem or in a song. If the teacher wants to test the understanding of the students then it is
recommended for him/her to choose the task where he/she can present those pieces to the
students and let them identify the irony, oxymoron and paradox. It is implied that the teacher
should give or show the students the example of literary pieces, either a fiction or poem and let
them read it to identify the following figures of speech. For better understanding, printed
sheets of the poem like To the Flower of Heidelberg by Jose Rizal or a narrative story entitled
Inferno by Dante can help the teacher to assess the students’ understanding and choose a
phrase or a sentence to help the teacher to explain the topic during discussion.
Rationale
Preparing those literary pieces by siting or let them read the literary piece from
literature or other textbooks just to identify the irony, oxymoron and paradox can help them to
familiarize words that will correct their diction, pronunciation and adding of vocabulary in
English language. Those materialize development will meet not only the standard of learning
that the teacher set or the objectives of the lesson, the overall goal of this learning competency
can be meet as well. The materials prepared by the teacher assess the students for better
understanding.
Principle of Material Applied
Principle of Language Acquisition 4 (L2 language learners can benefit from using those
mental resources which they typically utilize when acquiring and using their L1.)
In this part, this principle is the only one applied to the materials that the teacher prepared. If
the teacher will present the examples of phrases contains of different types figure of speech
(irony, oxymoron and paradox) after explaining the definition of each term, the essence of
reading and analyzing will dominate the essence of the area. The teacher can manipulate the
flow so it’s given that the teacher may require to the students to give the possible example of
irony, oxymoron and paradox. So in this part, the learners should read first what have written
on the board that was instructed by the teacher and started thinking the possible answer.
Formulating a sentence is a factor to show the applied principle of this aspect. During the
presentation of the topic, the teacher explains to them the different examples of the said topic
and check if the learners’ given examples are correct. In that specific part, the learners learned
at the same time their comprehension towards the topic become clear to them. After
presenting the materials that the teacher prepared, the students can identify now the irony,
oxymoron and paradox. They can able to formulate also a sentence that is in line to the topic.
As well as in the assessment part, reading the printed sheets that the teacher prepared can
boost their language acquisition because of the assistance of those materials.
When and How to Use the Material
The teacher itself is one of the most material develop in this aspect. The teacher is the
most efficient material to teach the learners. Through to their determination and dedication
they can able to disseminate information without any conflicts. The whole session in the whole
class, the teacher present in every part of teaching. They are present in motivation, discussion
and even in the assessment however the teacher has proximal ally in teaching the students.
Printed sheets as instructional materials are present in discussion proper and for assessment.
They dominated those parts in teaching. It is intended in that part because printed sheets of
the example chosen by the teacher are only essential to that part also. Explicating the usage of
that material vary on how the teacher visualized the capacity and reactions of the learners. The
teacher carefully chooses the right example from the textbooks or in the net that is essential
and suitable for the students. The teacher examine every part of the examples and look if the
topic are presented there before she/he printed those out and use as an instructional materials
that needed of the learners.
LEARNING COMPETENCY: Literature (LT)
EN7LT-II-i-4: Discover the conflicts presented in literary selections and the need
to resolve those conflicts in non-violent ways.
Materials:
Printed materials that contain literary selections will be disseminated to the students.
The students will be given a time to read the selections and internalize the story. After reading
they will be ask both objective and subjective questions. Objective questions such as the
conflict of the given story, and they will be asked about their own opinion on how they can
resolve the said conflicts on their own way without the use of violence.
RATIONALE
In using readymade printed materials that contain the chosen literary piece, it is easy
and convenient for the students to focus and read. By the used of the materials and the activity,
students will able to learn and at the same time given a chance to voice out their personal
opinion, regarding on the conflict of the story.
PRINCIPLES OF MATERIAL DEVELOPMENT
The Principle of language acquisition 2, which aims to maximize the exposure of the learners
to language in use they need to be, engaged both affectively and cognitively in the language
experience.
By the use of the material and the assigned task or activity, wherein the students are
asked to read and to respond regarding on the conflict of the story. By reading the literary
selection, they are practicing their comprehension, and at the same time given a chance to
reflect and give response and their own opinion on how they can resolve the conflict.
When and How
This material will be used in the lesson proper. During the lesson the students will be
given each a printed materials that contain the chosen literary piece or a story. They will be
given a time to read and analyze the story. After everyone is already finished reading, the
teacher will asked them questions such as the characters, settings, and the conflict. After that
the teacher will now ask for their personal view or opinion about the conflict of the story. They
will be asking to give their own stand or opinion on how they can resolve the problem or the
conflicts in their own way without any violence.
A teacher must prepare something that can help the students to easily get ideas to be
shared during class discussion. I learned that a teacher should always encourage students about
construction of new knowledge in order to develop critical thinking and reflection of learning
on how they understand the given topic. Thus, this way of teaching can help students to grow
foster and be knowledgeable enough. The teacher and the materials used for teaching are
significant for the students also to learn. These materials are essential for additional resources
in case the student is a visual learner or if ever they have a hard time understanding what is the
teacher is trying to convey. Through this activity I was able to reflect that it wasn’t easy to be a
teacher that you need to connect to your students if they understood the lesson. As a teacher
you need to be prepared and willing to assess your students. Lastly, as a teacher you need to
know if the teaching style is effective towards your learner. Take time with your students and
always be patient – let them ask for further information or if they have clarifications. The
learning of the students relies on how the teacher teaches her lesson. Thus, planning is very
important so as the implementation of all the materials needed in order for you to come up
with your intended learning outcomes.
There are things that are needed to prioritize in this matter. What are needed and what
are essentials in this area. There are many ways or materials to use but not all of them are
capable of handling or suitable for a specific matter. Like for instance, if the learning
competencies deals in reading so it is better that a teacher provide materials like textbooks and
instruct the learners to analyse the text and prepare an assessment so in that way, the learners
will read the given task at the same time it will enhance their critical thinking.
It is also important to always consider the students in creating materials. The materials
should always cater every type of learners, because not everyone has the same ability to
acquire knowledge. The materials as well as the activities should ensure that there will be an
interaction and cooperation from the students, in order to have a better and effective
acquisition of knowledge. So as a future teacher we know that teaching is not only a fashion or
job, teachers hold the keys to a better future for all. They inspire, challenge and empower
innovative and responsible global citizens. They get children into school, keep them there and
help them learn. So we, as future educator it is our responsibility to think of what our students
will learn from us. We're not meant to be teachers just only to teach but also to love our
students, we need to help them learn in a good way.
