CAREERS, SALARIES & LIFETIME INCOME By: Zaq Giorgi 1/29/2020 - ?/?/2020 MY CAREER CHOICES • My two chosen careers: This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-SA-NC. • Sound Engineer • Network Admin/Engineer • Reason(s): • Sound Engineer: I have always wanted to make and edit music, and this result showed up on my suggestions for a good career. • Network Admin/Engineer: This career is challenging, which I like, and $116,000 average pay? Unbeatable. MY FIRST CHOICE (SOUND ENGINEER) • Nature of Work: Make, mix and record musical productions (Music, TV, Radio etc.) • Working Conditions (location): • For TV productions: in-studio and on-the-go • For Music production: in-studio and on-the-go, sometimes global travel • For Radio productions: in-studio and on-the-go • Educational Preparation Requirements: 1-2 or more years of training, informal training, a certificate and an apprenticeship. • Salary Potential: Low-end earnings: $25,990, Average earnings: $54,740, High-end/Experienced earnings: $121,320 • Benefits: health insurance, retirement plan(s), paid leave MY FIRST CHOICE (NETWORK ADMINISTRATOR/IT SPECIALIST) • Nature of Work: Set up, configure and maintain network systems, such as Internet access, servers, data backups/cloud services and software. • Working Conditions (Location): Usually on-site, but in extreme cases, remote management is acceptable. • Training/Education Requirements: Minimum associate's degree, but bachelor's degree is preferred. Certificate and major in computer/IT science required. • Salary Potential: Low-end earnings: $52,370, Average earnings: $83,510, High-end/Experienced earnings: $132,520 • Benefits: Health insurance, retirement plan(s), paid leave MY BEST CHOICE: NETWORK ADMIN/IT SPECIALIST • Salary Comparison: In Nevada, demand for IT Specialists is lower than average, however, California has higher than average demand for IT Specialists. I will most likely apply for a job in California. • Income Comparisons: Network Admin's average salary: $83,510 vs Sound Engineer's average salary: $54,740 • Education's Effect on Income: The rule of thumb is more education, more money. Network Administrators require more education than sound engineers, which explains the salary difference. • Advantages of IT career: Desk job, more money, more colleagues for help • Disadvantages of IT career: Highly competitive due to high demand, smaller area of work, not as fun as sound engineering • Future Cost of Living: This career has plenty of benefits and a large salary to compensate for costs of living WORKS CITED • Network & Computer Systems Administrators • Sound Engineering Technicians This Photo by Unknown author is licensed under CC BY-SA.
