Selecting and Using Farm
Tools and Equipment
Planting agricultural crops is very important in our society. The main
source of our food came from agricultural farming. The success of crop
planting is depends on soil preparation. The kind and types of tools and
equipment used by the farmer determine the success and failure of his crops.
Thorough land preparation is achieved when we use appropriate tools and
equipment.
What’s In
Before we go to the topic we should know first some important terms.
Hand Tools - are usually light and are used without the help of animals or
machines. They are being used in performing farm activities which involve
small areas like school garden and home garden.
Farm implements –accessories pulled by animals or mounted to machineries
to make the work easier.
Equipment – powered tool machine used in farming. They are used in land
preparation and in transporting farm inputs and products. This equipment
need a highly skilled operator to use.
Preventive maintenance - an activity or operation done to prevent
malfunction of tools and equipment and it is done to prolong the useful life of
tools and equipment.
Repair - to restore to good condition something broken or damaged

What’s New
In order to perform agricultural operation successfully, one must have a
knowledge in using the tools, implements and equipment. Proper care and
maintenance of farm tools is necessary in order to prolong the serviceability of the
tools.
This module deals with the identification of farm tools, implements for
agricultural farm operations and develops the value of checking of tools before use
to avoid accidents.
To start with, I want you to look at the image below then write in your notebook
all the farm tools, equipment that you are familiar with and you have observed that
is commonly used by the farmers.
What is It
The tools that you have selected are some of the tools that are used in
agricultural operation. In order to prepare land for planting successfully, one must
have a good working knowledge of the tools, implements and equipment before using
them. Proper care and maintenance of farm tools are necessary in order to prolong
the serviceability of the tools.
To become more familiar with the different hand tools, farm implements and
equipment, lets us identify them and their functions.
3
HAND TOOLS
Bolo is used for cutting tall grasses and weeds.
Spade is used for removing trash or soil, digging
canals or ditches and mixing soil media.
Shovel is used in removing trash, digging loose soil,
moving soil from one place to another and for mixing
soil media.
Grab-hoe is used for breaking hard topsoil and
pulverizing soil.
Rake is used for cleaning the ground and
levelling the topsoil.
Pick mattock is used for digging canals, and for
removing stumps and stones.
Crowbar is used for digging up big stones and
tree stumps.
Hand trowel is used for loosening the soil around
the growing plants and putting small amount of
manure in the soil.
4
FARM EQUIPMENT
Hand tractor is used to pull a plow
and harrow in preparing a large area of
land.
Four wheel tractors are used to pull
disc plow and disc harrow in
preparing much bigger area of land.
Water pumps are used to draw
irrigation water from a source.
FARM IMPLEMENTS
1. Disc plow is farm implements mounted to machinery specifically used for
tilling large areas, making furrows and inters row cultivation.
Disc plow
Native wooden plow

2. Disc harrow is a farm implement mounted to machinery that is used to
till and pulverize the soil where crops are to be planted. It is also used to chop
up unwanted weeds or crop remainders.
Disc harrow Native harrow
BASIC PRE-OPERATIVE CHECK-UP OF FARM
IMPLEMENTS AND EQUIPMENT
Pre-operative check-up of farm implements and equipment is very
important for a horticulturist to known and to apply for him to elongate the
functionality and efficiency of the said implement and equipment. This is also
to identify if there are parts that need to repair or change.
The foremost importance of this is to ensure the effectiveness of farm
implements and equipment during using and to finish quality
accomplishments quickly and orderly.
Here are the steps in pre-operative check-up of farm tools, implements /
simple equipment.

3. All problems that are recorded must need an action to reduce or prevent
injury to the user.
Good work and quality output depend on the right kind of tools farm
implements/ equipment and facilities to be used in the right job. It is the very
important for an individual to have the knowledge and capability of securing.
