Among all this, we, the researchers, have observed common cries of the citizens here in our country are like, “I am so bored; how can I spend several months quarantined?” “We don’t have enough food and money, now we’re losing our jobs.” This pandemic has affected thousands of people, not only physically but also mentally. Fear and anxiety arise along with Covid-19. This pandemic also sent trauma to some because of what we are witnessing and experiencing right now. In order to deal with the stress, anxiety, and trauma, people engage themselves in some activities like online shopping, gardening, cooking, online selling, and engage themselves on multiple social media platforms to keep themselves preoccupied from the pandemic. People on social media are getting really bold with posting everything on their accounts. Just like some plantitos and plantitas- this term is what you call people who likes gardening- posting their plants everyday. There was once a negative news about these so called plantitos and plantitas. A group of these so 7 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 called plantitos and plantitas went out on a hiking and was seen holding different endangered plants. There were also innovative people who used worn out towels to make different pots and sold them to people who are interested in buying. The study will review gardening’s role and impact for some people’s lives. This study will show the results of a qualitative study on people’s perception on gardening, which became famous during the quarantine. This study will focus on people engaging in gardening and will recognize positive impacts of home gardening towards addressing food insecurity and malnutrition as well as providing additional benefits such as income and livelihood opportunities for resource-poor families and delivering a number of ecosystem services. This study also aims to find the main reasons why home gardens are so famous during quarantine and if the impact of home gardening is beneficial or not. 8 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Conceptual Framework INPUT Statement of the problem What are the felt benefits of home gardening in terms of: - Income and/or livelihood - food security and nutrition; and - emotional, physical and psychological health. What plant variety do home gardeners usually have? To what extent are they willing to spend with this activity? OUTPUT Blooms of the Quarantine Garden PROCESS Reasons why home gardening is beneficial. Recorded Narration - for food security or food source Analysis of Data -to feel emotionally and psychologically stable and at the same time physically healthy - to earn and save money Figure 1: Research Paradigm Based on research some benefits or advantages of gardening (financially or economically, emotionally, physically, and psychologically). Gardening can boost your mood. According to a 2012 study published in Extreme Physiology & Medicine, outdoor activity in a green environment causes “greater feelings of revitalization and positive engagement.” It counts as exercise, 9 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 according to a study of adults age 60 and older at Karolinska University Hospital in Stockholm, the level of exercise you get while gardening and doing housework is associated with lower risks of heart attack and stroke. Gardening also burns about 272 calories an hour (for a person weighing about 150 pounds), which is more than you’d burn spending the same hour walking at a moderate pace. You can sell what you produce, you can sell extra fruits, vegetables and even flowers from your garden. You can also save money on groceries. Most common plant varieties planted during the quarantine based on studies and observations are vegetables, such as eggplants, tomatoes, malunggay, string beans and pechay. Next plant varieties are snake plants or any indoor plants. Next are the photos plants, which are popular to those who like hanging plants indoor. Lastly are the famous monstera plants, which caused a ruckus during the first half of the quarantine in which the so called- plantitos and plantitas are competing on who has the biggest monstera plant. Plant prices in urban areas such as Manila are expensive, based on research and observations a pot of photos plants ranges from ₱600- ₱2000. Monstera plants cost not lesser than ₱1,100. A pot of snakeplant costs ₱350 - ₱900. We, the researchers, will get answers by conducting an interview to show that home gardening flourished not just because certain variety of plants, like 10 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 succulents, cacti and taro plants are trending and a lot of people keeps buying these type of plants even at a high price, but because gardening can make people earn and save money (Haynes,2009), calm, healthy and to avoid boredom (Wood, 2016). Statement of the Problem This study aims to answer the question why home gardening flourished during the quarantine. This study seeks answers to the following questions. 1. What are the felt benefits of home gardening in terms of: a) income and/or livelihood; b) food security and nutrition; and c) emotional, physical and psychological health. 2. What plant variety do home gardeners usually have? 3. To what extent are they willing to spend with this activity? Importance of the Study This study is important because it could help people of different ages, gender and status see the impacts of gardening to one’s lives. Home gardening 11 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 can help people out with problems regarding food, money, and job not only during the quarantine but also after the quarantine. Definition of Terms Beneficial refers to producing helpful effects Blooms means growing or prospering Garden is a place where we grow vegetables, fruit, herbs, or flowers Food security is the availability of food with a sufficient quantity for an individual Income is the money that an individual receives in exchange for providing a good or service Livelihood is the means of securing the basic necessities in life Malnutrition is the lack of proper nutrition caused by not having enough to eat Plants are either flowering or non-flowering types which were mostly planted during the quarantine Quarantine is the prevention of the movement of those who may have been exposed to a communicable disease 12 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Trend refers to topics that are the subject of many posts on a social media website and became popular within a short period of time. 13 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Chapter II METHOD AND PROCEDURES Research Design This study used narrative inquiry as its research design since the study seeks to determine the reasons behind the emergence of home gardens during quarantine. Likewise, this study identified the plant variety common to home gardeners as well as the extent of their expenditure for this kind of activity. Sources of Data This study made use of convenience sampling wherein a target of 5 participants were selected based on availability and willingness to take part. The respondents came from within our local residence, these participants’ age ranges from 21-50 years old, they are also women and lastly some of them did not have a job during the quarantine. This is a five-month study. This time duration includes research proposal presentation, data collection and analysis, and research paper presentation. 14 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Instrumentation and Data Collection We made use of the interview method to gather the necessary data. The data were consolidated and analyzed to come up with answers to research questions and recommendations. The interview contains three questions and the interviewees are to narrate their experience and the impact they received when they started gardening. The narrated answer will aim to answer all the questions formulated by the group. The answers of each interviewees will be written in verbatim. The data gathered is interpreted in the form of written work and tables. Ethical Considerations We, the researchers, will guarantee that the subjects will not be exposed to any harm. We will respect the dignity of the research participants. A full consent from the participants will be obtained prior to the study. Privacy protection of research participants will be ensured. Any type of misleading information, as well as representation of primary data findings in a biased way will be avoided. The confidentiality of data will be assured and the data will not be kept longer than intended. We, the researchers, will guarantee to take full responsibilities if any of the considerations are violated. 15 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Chapter III RESULTS AND DISCUSSION Table 1 presents the response of participant number 1. For food security, the participants have said most of the plants they plant are food-bearing plants in order to have food during the quarantine. These gardens provide access to healthy foods for families who have limited food access or those who cannot afford fresh produced foods, and community gardeners consume more servings of fresh fruits and vegetables daily than non- gardener (Twiss, 2003). For income, gardening has become the source of income for some because the harvested crops were sold. Home gardeners earn from this livelihood venture by selling it to a nearby market or to their neighbors. Their products are in demand among buyers because of the ‘naturally grown’ factor (Twiss, 2003). Likewise, gardening has lessened household expenses since this has also been a source of food to be consumed. For entertainment, gardening also serves as a form of hobby. Some of the participants said they plant in order to have decorations around their house and in order for them not to get bored and do something productive during the 27 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 quarantine. Similarly, this also helps sustain mental health. Staying at home for months made some of us depressed and gained unhealthy fats, the participants stated home gardening made them feel calm during the pandemic. According to the participants it also serves as an exercise because they move and do a lot of work. Among the plant varieties that most gardeners plant are fruits and vegetables. The respondents are willing to spend money as long as equal benefits are returned. Conclusion In conclusion gardening flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic because of the following: Food: since vegetables and fruits are the main variety of plant gardeners plant, it is a good source of food especially during the quarantine since food from the market are expensive Income: gardeners can sell their extra vegetables or fruits to people, or they can sell ornamental plants or other varieties of plants. Health: eating fresh and home-grown fruits or vegetables will secure your health, for you know it is healthy and it does not contain pesticides. Gardening involves physical movements which can make you fit and also immune since you will get exposed to dirt. 28 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 Entertainment: people found gardening really entertaining since having a garden with different varieties of plant is really breath-taking and it can beautify your homes Recommendations This research aims to prove why home gardening flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic. The results of this research are from various people from certain places only. These findings cannot be generalized by other students from other universities and other places. The researchers recommend for future researchers of the same topic to conduct an interview before and after people started gardening to truly test if gardening made an impact on someone’s psychological, physical and emotional health. We, the researchers, also want to recommend adding pictures of the participants’ garden and the things they gave up since they focused on gardening. The study needs to be conducted by other students from other universities and with a larger population or scale to see if there are any similarities or differences with the factors why home gardening flourished during the COVID-19 pandemic. 29 Abasolo, Apilado, Aromin, Galvez, Russell 拉 允 隆 文 化 書 院 LA UNION CULTURAL INSTITUTE SY 2020- 2021 BIBLIOGRAPHY Alpad, C.
