What did you learn from the activity? Many students are taking remediation courses in college because their reading skills are not at the appropriate level. Students are lacking skills of understanding and applying, high level vocabulary, poor decoding skills and the inability to synthesize information. A reading enhancement program was used that targeted specific needs of each student, engaged their interests, and when students noticed a difference in their lexile levels, they began to work harder. The main component of the program was the individualization to target student needs and to find the gaps and to address the gaps. How will you apply what was learned into the classroom? Or how have you applied what was learned into your classroom? I would plan to use the lexile levels as a deeper part of my instruction in my sophomore English classes next year. I would like to enrich my students’ understanding of decoding, fluency, and comprehension to improve not only their lexile levels but to also help prepare for the ACT and college/career readiness. I like the workshop approach of the model where students would be taught a mini-lesson and have independent reading time with conferencing where I could meet individual needs and monitor for progress in reading skills. I will plan to do this type of activity for the first two weeks of school to better prepare for units throughout the school year. Through the ongoing growth and development of Warren Central faculty and staff, our students will be equipped to be productive, successful, and competitive in any healthy venue they choose.
