Lichen is a combination of both fungi and algae. Algae are often mistaken to be plants, but they are not. Lichen is an example of ‘mutualism’, which means two diļ¬erent species that very close live together and benefit each other. Lichen grows on rocks and trees. Moss grows on fallen trees and on rocks. It is a very interesting plant because it does not have roots and is considered to be both a ‘decomposer’ and a ‘producer’. A decomposer because it helps logs to breakdown and rot and a producer because it makes its own nutrients from sun light.
