Brawl And even defeated Ganon in under five minutes Liam_Doolanby Liam Doolan Fri, 9pmShare:0 Legend of Zelda Image: Nintendo Remember the timed Nintendo demos you were able to play in Super Smash Bros. Brawl on the Nintendo Wii? Well, a speedrunner has used this trial to roll the credits in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (yes, you can play through the entire game). The speedrunner and YouTuber known as 'Savestate' used the Zelda demo located within the 'Masterpieces' menu and was able to complete the game in just 4 minutes and 38 seconds. That's just 12 seconds before the demo session times out. Here's a bit extra about it, which also reveals how the run was achieved in the Japanese version of the demo: "This version of Ocarina of Time included in the Masterpieces selection in Super Smash Brothers Brawl is a timed demo of the game (5 minutes) which includes 2 save files: one starting as Child with nothing except the intro cutscene cleared and another as Adult with small amount of progression after turning adult. With the items given to us in the JP version of the demo, we're able to just barely squeeze in two SRMs with custom heap manipulations, along with a fish allocation in Goron City to perform a current cutscene SRM wrong warp to the credits." Subscribe to Nintendo Life on If warping doesn't cut it, after completing the original run, the same speedrunner went back and defeated Ganon in 4 minutes and 56 seconds (after trying over 200 times). Savestate even explained how precious every second was in this particular run: "For this route, you only have about 10 (ten!) seconds of leeway over the whole 5 minute demo. Two HESSes (moving backwards really fast), Lost Woods bridge skip, SRM, and a clean Ganon fight are just barely enough to clock in under 5 minutes. After grinding for over 200 attempts, I was finally able to execute well enough to defeat Ganon with a mid 4:56 (3.5 seconds before the demo ended)." How rude. 14Reply Inc 2IncFri, 9:17pm I'm more impressed Nintendo included that much of the game! Perhaps they knew some cheeky chaps would speed run it and didn't want to cut anyone short. 10Reply abbyhitter 3abbyhitterFri, 9:22pm I had forgotten that Brawl had timed demos of games. Wish Ultimate had those. 4Reply Eel 4EelFri, 9:25pm @Inc it would probably be way harder to chop up the games into pieces for the demos. The files for the full games are already small anyway… So slapping a timer on them is likely just the easiest and cheapest option. 23Reply PBandSmelly 5PBandSmellyFri, 9:28pm ...so Brawl just had the ENTIRETY of the games in there??? Has anyone ever modded the timers out? 11Reply Snatcher 6SnatcherFri, 9:34pm @PBandSmelly If you did you could play it for free, crazy. 2Reply CharlieGirl 7CharlieGirlFri, 9:35pm @PBandSmelly not yet, but let it be spoken into existence! 1Reply Fiyaball 8FiyaballFri, 9:49pm @PBandSmelly Oh they did it ages ago. Might even be some AR/GS/etc codes for it 0Reply Malion 9MalionFri, 9:49pm I bet he couldn't do it without glitches! Back in my day we enjoyed a game 100% per cent! /j 4Reply TheFrenchiestFry 10TheFrenchiestFryFri, 10:19pm @abbyhitter Some of the games repped in Ultimate would flat out not work properly condensed to fit the Masterpieces format Like imagine how long you'd last in a trial for something like Final Fantasy VII, or Metal Gear Solid, or Persona 5 5Reply Friendly 11FriendlyFri, 11:17pm Which game has more glitches, Cyberpunk or Ocarina of Time? 0Reply jingounchained 12jingounchainedFri, 11:41pm It took me only a second to figure out the context clues from that headline. Seriously impressive! I always enjoyed seeing how far I could get in those little demos, good times. 0Reply yuwarite 13yuwariteFri, 11:43pm @Inc "Perhaps they knew some cheeky chaps would speed run it and didn't want to cut anyone short." Lol, no. Not even close. This was 2008 Nintendo, they barely even understood what speedrunning was back then. They didn't understand their own Smash Bros community, either (see: tripping). 5Reply ModdedInkling 14ModdedInklingYesterday, 12:04am @abbyhitter eShop demos: "Am I a joke to you?" 2Reply Cia 15CiaYesterday, 12:27am @Friendly At the time I played Ocarina of Time, I must've completed it at least 30 times and I never ran into a single glitch. I thought it was amazing. It's just that the speedrunners have intentionally broken the game by checking out its code and trying all kinds of weird things while playing. If it was full of glitches for the normal player, it wouldn't have been called the greatest game of all time in so many instances. That's the difference between OOT and Cyberpunk. The latter is, or at least was at the time of the initial release, really so plagued with glitches that anyone could run into several of them. 7Reply Matroska 16MatroskaYesterday, 12:59am I love speedrunning though I'm terrible under pressure and hate being timed so I'd be awful at it. I did used to be about to complete RE2 in about 1h45 mins or thereabouts, though. Talking of which, that also had a timed demo back in the day and I used to wonder how far you could actually get in it. @PBandSmelly Well bear in mind how small the game is. The biggest N64 carts were only 64mb. That means if you used the largest carts, it'd take 21 of them to contain Final Fantasy VII, a game from the year before OoT. Incidentally, that would've cost about £1260 at the time (£60 a cart). When you adjust for inflation to see what that'd be nowadays, it's a whopping £2,267! Holy crap. 0Reply Murbs 17MurbsYesterday, 2:38am You know 4 minutes 38 seconds plus 12 seconds doesn’t equal 5 minutes, right? Perhaps you should have downloaded calculator on the Switch 😂 11Reply Tourtus 18TourtusYesterday, 2:43am Weird thing is I was just thinking about these demos Brawl had and wondering if they had the full games in them and then this article comes up. 4Reply kurtasbestos 19kurtasbestosYesterday, 4:37am I wish I had this kind of free time. Not exactly for this sort of thing, but for pretty much anything, really. 2Reply TheBigK 20TheBigKYesterday, 7:56am @Murbs Hey man, cut them some slack. Math is hard 🤣 1Reply Borshi 21BorshiYesterday, 8:56am I didn`t remembered those demos at all lol It just goes to show peoples dedication to certain niches of gaming culture I guess... 0Reply BongoBongo123 22BongoBongo123Yesterday, 12:44pm @abbyhitter Wish Ultimate had trophies with descriptions as well as spirits. 0Reply GoombaGreg 23GoombaGregYesterday, 12:51pm @Murbs I looked at the comments just to see if anyone pointed this out lol 1Reply Aurumonado 24AurumonadoYesterday, 6:01pm This is extremely cool. I remember trying to beat the dungeon in the wind waker demo on the GCN zelda collection. I could never get very far in the 5 min on the OoT brawl demo though. 1Reply garfreek 25garfreekYesterday, 6:14pm @Aurumonado yhea, that Windwaker demo was fun! I got really far in the forsaken fortress part! 1Reply Screen 26ScreenYesterday, 6:20pm We just got jabaited. 0Reply CodyMKW 27CodyMKW12:42am @PBandSmelly I swear I remember seeing someone made a cheat code that removes the time limit 🤔 0Reply Sean161 28Sean1611:48am This is not completing a game. It’s exploiting its faults. 1Reply Boxmonkey 29Boxmonkey3:31am Arbitrary code execution is strange 0Reply EarthboundBenjy 30EarthboundBenjy8:51am @Sean161 Yeah but this is the Brawl 5 min demo. Just seeing Ganondorf in this thing is something remarkable, and these tricks are the only way to do that. 0Reply Dpullam 31Dpullam11:26am This is a pretty sweet accomplishment though I have no desire myself to use glitches to earn feats like these. This was definitely the only way to do it though. 0Reply Sean161 32Sean1615:21pm @EarthboundBenjy I did t see a ganondorf though? 0Reply EarthboundBenjy 33EarthboundBenjy5:52pm @Sean161 The second video in this article has Ganondorf. The first one, yes, it uses a credits warp glitch. But the point is still the same - seeing the Ocarina of Time credits inside the Brawl demo has never been done before, and is only possible using these so-called exploits. So, no, it's not "completing the game" in the traditional sense, but it is something interesting that these people have figured out is possible, which I find very impressive. 0Reply Leave A Comment Hold on there, you need to login to post a comment...
