It is an early photographic printing process that produces a
Prussian blue and white “blueprint”. All you need is light, time,
paper and a light-sensitive chemical.
Discovered in 1842 by Sir John Herschel, the “blueprint” process
involves mixing two iron-based chemical solutions: ferric
ammonium citrate and potassium ferricyanide.

We often do not have time in our busy lives to notice the plants that
grow all around us. I invite you to take the time to look quietly at the
simple beauty of wild plants and weeds that surround us, and to
appreciate their form, colour and texture.

How to make a “dry” cyanotype print
The liquid emulsion is applied with a brush to watercolour paper
and left to dry. A digital negative or object is placed on the paper to
create a photogram. Once the watercolour paper is exposed to the
sun’s UV rays and rinsed in plain water, a blue and white image
appears; it is then hung to dry. Sometimes, I hand tone the dry
prints with tea or oak bark.
How to make a “wet” cyanotype print
This involves exposing the still wet-coated paper with plant matter
for several hours directly in the sun, adding other ingredients to the
mix, such as sea salt, vinegar, baking soda, turmeric or soap
bubbles. The print is then rinsed in water, then hung to dry.
Statement about this exhibition
All thirty-seven framed cyanotypes in this exhibition are original,
one-of-a-kind handmade prints.
