Getting to Know You Suggested Directions Copy the “Getting to Know You” sheet. Pass out the pages so that each student has a copy. Set a timer and tell the students how long they will have to fill out the page. Depending on your students and your classroom setup, this could take anywhere from 5-20 minutes. If you are not sure how long it will take, you can just have students fill them out until every space is full. Some teachers like to see how many boxes students can fill within an allotted time, but I prefer not to make it a contest because that can give an unfair advantage to outgoing students and can unnecessarily alienate shy students or students with disabilities. When you say “go,” have students walk around the classroom and meet people. You decide the ground rules here. I prefer to tell students they must write the names themselves and ask the questions themselves. Sometimes, students like to just hand the sheet around and have people fill it out. That doesn’t really break the ice! Another rule I like to impose is that students can only count a classmate once (for example, if their classmate Tom has a cat and has also lived in a different state, they will need to decide which one to count Tom for). You may need to adjust these rules based on the size of your class. You can also include adults in the activity, although some of the boxes may not apply to them. When the game is over, determine if there are any boxes that no students were able to fill. Those boxes will become free spaces. Optional debriefing activity: Go around the room and have each person share an interesting thing they learned about someone in the class. Examples: “I learned that Ravi was born in Michigan.” or “I learned that Sarah has a pet rat.” During debriefing, it can be nice to ask students not to name a person who has already had an interesting fact shared about them. That way, each student will have something shared. Creative Access Created 2016 by Creative Access on Teachers Pay Teachers. Duplication permitted if product was purchased.
