Functions of Nouns
I. NOUN AS SUBJECT is the doer of the action and the topic of the sentence.
Doer of the action
- Fishermen catch fish. (Who catch fish?)
Topic of the Sentence - Emmanuel is responsible. (Who is responsible?)
II. NOUN AS SUBJECT COMPLEMENT renames or describes the subject.
Joana is a doctor.
(Who is a doctor?)
Moisa is a teacher.
(Who is a teacher?)
Jelaine is my sister.
(Who is my sister?)
III. NOUN AS DIRECT ADDRESS is the name of the person being spoken to. A comma should
be used before or after it.
“John, can you please help?”
“Take care, Chris.”

VI. NOUNS AS INDIRECT OBJECTS receives what is being given or done. It answers the
question to whom.
I gave Sean the book.
(I gave the book to whom?)
She made her mother a letter. (She made a letter for whom?)
