SSCCC Responds to the UC Regent Decision to Increase Tuition
SACRAMENTO -- The Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) is
outraged by the University of California (UC) Regents’ decision to increase the cost of
tuition.
“The decision to increase the cost of tuition, especially in times of economic hardship
due to the Covid-19 pandemic, is incredibly insensitive to the struggles of students
coming from first-generation, low-income, and underserved backgrounds. At a time when
students are facing overwhelming financial burdens, more access not less should be
available.” said SSCCC President, Gerardo Chavez.
The SSCCC has a long history of advocating for accessibility and affordability for CCC
students that results in transfer to a four-year university. One of SSCCC's main priorities,
in collaboration with CSSA and UCSA, has been to break down financial barriers and
create a more affordable higher education as demonstrated by our work on the Fix
Financial Aid Coalition. We support the UC student leaders as they advocate against the
increase of tuition and thank them for their continued fight for access.
"The UC Regents decision to increase tuition is inexcusable and must be addressed. The
community college system's long fight for financial aid reform has been repressed by the
UC Regents with this tuition increase. With this tuition hike, community college students
will face more obstacles when transferring to UC thus adding to an already expansive
inequity gap" said Jasmine Prasad, Vice President of Legislative Affairs.
The mission of the Student Senate for California Community Colleges (SSCCC) is to
pursue policies that will improve student access, promote student success, engage and
empower local student leaders, and enrich the collegiate experience for all California
community college students.
The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the
nation, composed of 73 districts and 116 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year.
The Student Senate for California Community College works to promote and safeguard
access for current and future students to California public higher education in
accordance with the Master Plan for Higher Education through system participatory
governance, legislative and policy advocacy, and regional support and development
and is the official voice of California community college students statewide.
