Imagine your future This activity is intended to be a warmup to another topic involving the future (college, careers, school). 1. Start by introducing that we will be doing an imagination activity where they will be asked to close their eyes and use their imagination. Remind them that they are safe and nothing will happen, but reiterate that closing their eyes will help them to not be distracted. 2. Have the students choose a spot in the room and a position where they can be comfortable. Note: There will be one or two students who feel weird so they joke with a weird location. You can either ignore it and proceed (they will eventually shift to something more in line with the intent) OR you can make a joke then ask them to move to a more comfortable position and get started. Don’t draw too much attention and time to them as it will impact their ability, and those around them, to naturally get comfortable. 3. Once everyone is in a manageable sitting/laying position, begin the below activity. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Breathe in…….and out…….feel your body relax more with each big breath out Keeping your eyes closed, think about 10 years from now so you’re 26 or 27. You are living the live you have made choices to get to. You’re at work. It’s a typical day at work. o What is the environment like? Are you working outside? Inside? Are you presenting to people? Doing work alone at a desk? In a lab? Are you in a hospital? Traveling for work? o Are you in the job for awhile or are you planning to go back to school or move up in a company? Are you your own boss? It’s the end of the day and you’re going home now. Feel the warmth and comfort of your home after a long day. o What does home feel like? Is it just you? Is it you and your family? Do you have a dog or a cat running up to you when you get home? o Are you going to an apartment? A house? o Are you cooking? Are you ordering food from somewhere? Maybe you’re cooking with someone in the kitchen listening to music and laughing with each other. Now it’s the weekend! What are you doing? o Are you going out with friends? Spending time with your family? o Are you spending time outside? o Are you planning a trip somewhere far away? o What is making you smile and making your heart happy? Who are you spending your time with? Depending on the group, have people talk about what they envisioned for their future.
