AUTOREFRACTOR AND RETINOSCOPE -METHODOF USE AUTOREFRACTOR Patient must sit in front of the machine, put their chin on the rest and look through the two lenses into the machine. They’ll be asked to look at an image, or stay focused on a point of light, while the autorefractor takes its measurements. Each eye is measured in turn, beginning with the right eye. A vertical alignment joystick/knob on the instrument is adjusted and moved until the patient can view the fixation target with their right eye. The joystick is adjusted until the pupil is vertically centred on an LCD screen The joystick is moved in, out, left or right until the alignment targets are in focus and centred on the pupil If the instrument is set up in the auto mode, the measurements will automatically be acquired when alignment is achieved If the instrument is set up in the manual mode, the fire button is depressed to acquire a measurement when alignment is achieved Multiple readings are taken automatically/manually to allow for minor fluctuations in accommodation The same procedure is repeated for the left eye Once readings are obtained, the instrument may automatically print out the results or the print button is pressed for a print-out of the results. https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRwbltjdIPvOVPTnKU3RpbDpcckBqOUtpnkA&usqp=CAU RETINOSCOPE Make sure you are sitting at the same height and eye level as the patient. Ensure your working distance is correct Starting from the right side, shine the retinoscopy streak into their eye and move the streak from side to side. decide whether the patient’s light reflex moves “with” their pupil or “against” motion. Make sure to look at the reflex in different meridians as you rotate the axis of the streak. If the reflex has a consistent brightness and width all around, the patient doesn’t have astigmatism. In contrast, if the reflex looks dimmer/brighter or thinner/thicker when alternating the axis of the streak, then the patient does have astigmatism, and you will need to correct it. https://encryptedtbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcTnZGkFtyvth3pJqFetWKl4njXLao3G5xMgCw&usqp= CAU Opticianonline.net.
