Week #2 of semester (first week of lab):
Look at syllabus for specifics of what is being told to students
LAB INSTRUCTORS During lab:

Communication (all of these activity worksheets are located in Module for Week 1&2)
o SBAR activity
 Lab: SBAR activity. bring laptop to lab today. print off printable form SBAR
(found in CANVAS). Have students do an SBAR based on the following, with their
lab partner. Then they can practice charting the SBAR in a note, in docucare.


Your patient, Mr. Smith has just fallen. You did not witness this
fall. He is not complaining of anything hurting and says he slipped.
He was not wearing protective footwear. Before your team helps
Mr. Smith back to bed, you do a quick assessment. He hasn’t hit
his head, he is alert and oriented x4. He is moving all of his
extremities without difficulty. Current vitals: Temperature: 98.6
degrees, Pulse: 76, Respirations: 20, BP: 120/80, oxygen
saturation: 98% on 2L oxygen. Here is the history on the patient:
o Other History in case they ask for it:
 Name: Mr. R. Smith 76 years old
 Admitted to UMSL Hospital 4 days ago for
respiratory distress; diagnosed with pneumonia.
 History: pneumonia in 2019, appendectomy in 2019
 Full Code
 Lives alone
 Currently was doing well and there are plans for
him to DC to home today.
 Labs: nothing significant
 Diet: Regular
 Intake: adequate amounts
 Output: clear yellow urine via urinal; adequate
amounts;
o Assessment: no concerns.
 Lungs are clear to auscultation
 Heart is regular
 Abdomen is soft and nontender
 Vitals are stable
 Normally he is on room air (meaning no assistance
of oxygen)
 Walks without assistance with normal gait
 No IV
Documentation activity
 Lab: Give students the nurse’s head to toe note and have them work in groups
to see how many abbreviations they know. Instructor helps monitor and
facilitate.


Then, have the students document everything from the note, into docucare
(just to show that there are other ways to document). This can obviously be
done multiple ways. Instructor helps monitor and facilitate.
 In pairs, students practice taking a history on each other (they can make up a
history if they prefer). Each student documents the history in docucare as they
go. Instructor helps monitor and facilitate.
Patient hand-off activity
 Lab activity related to patient-handoff. Utilize the ‘Primary nurse worksheet’ or
the ‘Blank report sheet.’ Work in pairs to practice giving and receiving report.
Make sure students understand the beginnings of WHAT’s important to include
during hand-off’. They can utilize the nurses note above for this piece.

 Skin care- Hygiene Skills:
o Go through as many skills as you can with the student. Most if not all have never bathed
