INTRODUCTION
A. ATTENTION: Stress has been shown to be a contributing factor in the development and
exacerbation of several physical and mental health conditions including anxiety disorders,
arthritis, asthma, cardiovascular disease, depression, stroke, and cancer. (Slavich, 2016)
B. SIGNIFICANCE: 2 in 3 adults (67%) say they have experienced increased stress over the course of
the pandemic. (APA, 2020)
C. CREDIBILITY: In 2019 I became a Certified Personal Trainer and upon completion of the training
program, I began studying to become a certified health coach.
D. PURPOSE STATEMENT: To explain different types of stress and how chronic stress effects
health.

BODY
TRANSITIONAL STATEMENT: Stress can be described as a person's reaction to the various
experiences and events if everyday life.

Stress can be broken down into three categories
a) Eustress is considered positive, whereas distress is negative
b) Stress is caused by either internal or external stressors
c) Are you experiencing short- or long-term stress, acute vs chronic?
TRANSITIONAL STATEMENT: Although not all stress is bad, long-term stress exposure may lead
to deleterious health consequences.

Chronic stress negatively effects health in many ways
a) There are several conditions that may develop or worsen as a result of ongoing stress
b) Stress impacts positive health behaviors like self-efficacy and motivation.
CONCLUSION
A. In summary, stress results more from one’s perception of, and reaction to, conditions, rather
than to solely the conditions themselves.
