Suggestions/Checklist for your scientific report writing
Observing Changes in Water
Appearance:
 Size 12 font (except for headings).
 Algin – Justify or left (not centre).
 Font – plain font (no twirly style font).
 Writings to be placed under the appropriate headings.
Spelling, grammar and punctuation:
 Ensure you have correct spelling
 Choose one tense and stay with it (have/had), (does, did) etc – preferably in past tense!
 Full stops, commas and capitals.
Images:
 Graphs/tables to be fully labelled (titles, units, legend).
 Add captions to graphs and other images (right click on said image and click on “insert caption” to add the
details.
Scientific Writing:
 Include vocabulary (e.g. physical change, chemical change, state of matter, evaporation, vapour, element,
compound, heat energy/transfer, temperature, hydrogen, oxygen, particles, properties).
 Aim - a “to” statement.
 Hypothesis – If…then… statement.
 Equipment – List equipment.
 Method – step by step instructions.
 Results – diagram of the set-up (labelled).
 Diagram – labelled tables & graphs.
- Discussion (refer to vocabulary suggestions)
 Comments on your first observations (what you started with).
 Comments on what happened during the experiment (changes).
 Comments on the end product of the experiment.
 Refer to the data (table/graph) throughout the discussion.
 Comments on any patterns observed.
 Comments on any possible errors (if any).
 Comments on how the experiments could improve (if any).
- Conclusion
 Summarise the results and discussion
 Comment on whether your findings support/don’t support your hypothesis (link).
