Workplace Behaviour
Presentation Title
What is bad behaviour at work? Let's take an
example.
Ian is an engineer in aerospace. He is extremely
knowledgeable and works hard on his
projects. His mannerisms with his coworkers are
not the best. His team has been able to put up
with him for many years. They are a friendly
bunch that have accepted his ineptness at
people skills. They have generally ignored Ian's
comments and said things like, "Ah, that is just
Ian, don’t mind him." But, over the last year, a
few team members have made progress. One of
their replacements is now off sick with stress for
six week and he blames Ian's often unkind
comments. The team has fallen behind in a
crucial project.

Ian made a great contribution to the team a
year ago. But now, he is the problem. He's
doing nothing different. He was and still is
acting badly.

Denial is not the solution. However, public outbursts
can be very helpful. If you have to deal with bad
behavior, you should find a place away from the rest of
your team where you can talk to the offender about the
issue.
You should be ready to:
Give a short, factual summary about what happened.
Describe the negative effect you perceive.
Describe the emotions you or a member of your team
felt about the incident (frustrated, disappointed, etc.).
If necessary, set some goals and state how you want to
see the behavior changed.
