PRE-LAB SETUP (15 points)
1. Type the procedure for this experiment in your own words. Feel free to use a bullet list (avoid huge
paragraphs).
Step 1: Start off by filling 2/3 of a pot with water
Step 2: Get six nickels to use for the experiment and figure out their mass.
Step 3: Put the nickels in the pot of water
Step 4: When the water starts boiling, set a timer for 5 mins and let the nickels boil for that duration
Step 5: Get the mass of a Styrofoam cup while the coins are boiling.
Step 6: Get the mass of the cup when water is added (40 mL).
Step 7. Take the temperature of the water in the cup. (remember this number for comparison reasons, represents
the water in the cup)
Step 8. Take the temperature of the boiling water. (remember this number for comparison reasons, represents
the nickels). Use the perforated spoon to carefully drain the pot and retrieve the nickels. From here, add the nickels
to the cup of water as soon as possible.
Step 9. Use a different thermometer to measure the temperature of the water with the nickels added. The highest
temperature measured will be the final temperature for both the nickels and water.
Step 10. Dry off the coins then repeat steps 1-9 two more times.
Step 11. Take at least 3 pictures for the journal.
PRE-LAB QUESTIONS (15 points)
1. Define the following terms:
a. Specific heat:
the amount of heat needed to raise the temperature of one gram/unit of a
substance by 1 degree (Celsius)
b. Endothermic reaction:
a chemical reaction where heat is absorbed
c. Heat:
the amount of energy that is transferred from one substance/object because of a
difference in temperature
2. Determine how many calories are needed to heat 30g of water from 10 oC to 30oC. Show your work.

3. A hot pack contains 715 g of water at 60oC. If the water cools to body temperature (37oC). How many
kilocalories of heat could be transferred to an inflamed ankle? Show your work.
