SOUTH AFRICAN PLAYWRIGHTS Mbongeni Ngema was born in 1955 in Verulam near Durban. He grew up in rural Zululand where he taught himself to play the guitar. Later he moved to the ghettos of Durban to work. He took part in a play when one of the actors fell ill. He then knew he wanted to make music and perform and write plays, He did this until he moved to Johannesburg to join Gibson Kente's company. (Kente was the father of theatre in South Africa.) Ngema studied Kente's style and read up on theatre styles elsewhere. Joined by Percy Mtwa, he left Kente's company and with Barney Simon of the Market Theatre, they created Woza Albert. This play toured the world from London West End to New York's Broadway. Ngema returned to form his company, Committed Artists, in an empty Johannesburg building. Asinamali (a play about Durban township rent strikes); Sarafina! (about the school boycotts by youth in 1976); Township Fever (about one of the largest strikes in South African history); Magic at 4 a.m. (about life in South Africa, but inspired by the life of Mohammed Ali). He launched Tusk, the first black international company. Many of his plays have toured the world and Sarafina! was even made into a movie starring Whoopi Goldberg. Ngema has called his style the Theatre of Liberation. There was much debate around Ngema's Sarafina II that was funded as an Aids publicity campaign.
