Character Poems
“We are our own best friends” Poems written about ourselves may contain the wit, the vulnerability or the seriousness
with which we view ourselves and our actions. Sometimes it creates an easy beginning into writing by choosing
ourselves for the subject. Sometimes we can hide in other peoples’ clothes and describe that particular person with
the personal “I”, so we create a character – the character we have become. Likes, dislikes, and attitudes are all part
of the composite picture we create. Poetry takes many forms. Notice that the following style does not use rhym e.

My name is Sally Carter
Most of my friends call me Sal, but my students call me Ms Carter or just Miss
I am way too many years old
I have 3 kids and my eyes itch in spring
I hate smoking, but I love the smoke from camp fires
I can’t stand reality TV but “The Voice” auditions are my favourite
I love peace and quiet, but I think the noise of speedway racing is awesome!
I have really busy weekends
I dodge gardening
I don’t believe in fate
Jeans worn too low irk me. I want more sleep
I hate people making others feel small
I still think books are better than TV
My favourite food is cooked by someone else, when I can get it
(if not, I’d happily stick with toast)
I wish to hell I could sing better
Smurfette is my favourite cartoon character
I wish sunscreen came in tablet form
I think cyclist should get more respect on the roads
I pretend I’m confident but I’m actually quite shy
I think Winnie the Pooh, anklets, Fantales and
black cats are great.

I can’t stand tennis, but Patrick Rafter is my second favourite
I used Telfast, and I don’t have itchy eyes anymore
