Assignment Brief and Guidance:
Scenario
Consider you are a technologist in petroleum company working in the upstream and your
supervisor asked you to present your technical knowledge you know about chemical composition
of crude oils and different types of the main products derived from each crude oil. You are required to
make a report
describing the following tasks: -
2
Task
1- The following compounds are generally found in the analysis of a crude oil:
ethane, propane, isobutane, n-butane, isopentane, n-pentane, cyclopentane,
cyclohexane, n-hexane ,benzene, and heavier grouped as C7+
a. For each compound, draw the chemical structure and give the formula. Also
indicate the name of hydrocarbon group that each compound belongs to.
b. From the above list give the compounds that possibly exist in a gasoline
fraction. P7
2. Explain in detail techniques used in characterization and properties of pure
hydrocarbons. P8, P9
3. Identify the principles of techniques used in characterization and
differentiation of pure hydrocarbons (Test Method). M3
4. Analyze in detail the main chemical properties of pure hydrocarbons. D3
