
The Pax Romana was a long period of relative peace

the reign of Caesar Augustus, the first Roman emperor,
and the death of Marcus Aurelius, last of the "good
emperors”.
Some factors that held The
Roman Empire together during
Pax Romana

Multiculturalism
The Roman empire allowed everyone to retain a bit of their
culture. They never forced people they conquered to
drop their language or religion . Rather the Romans
picked some ideas from the conquered cities such as
Armour from the Gauls and Art from the Greeks.

Good Government and Law
The Roman empire had good system of government.
Governors were placed in-charge of provinces. Taxes
were paid and laws put in place to serve as guides.

Roman citizenship
The People desired to be called Roman citizens because of
the benefits that comes with it such as serving in the
army. So they obeyed Roman constituted authorities.

The army
The army was the life wire of the empire. They helped
them fight during war, protected the citizens and also
contributed to its economic growth.

Trade
The Romans traded with other countries such as some
countries in Africa, India and China. Within Rome slave
trade and wine was at its peak. The money made from

Slavery in Pax Romana

The period of Pax Romana although peaceful was
marred by slave trade.
They depended heavily on
slaves to work on the farms or buildings. The Luxury
that was enjoyed by many Romans was made possible by
slaves.

They were branded for easy identification . The slaves
also served as maids, cleaners, nannies etc.The
educated ones received better treatment than the
uneducated. They were denied the privileges that a
Roman citizen was entitled to.
The POORER CLASSES
The poorer classes

The Pax Romana period painted a picture of a wealthy
Rome. However , all is it all it seems. There still existed
the poor. These people lived in slums. And they suffered
from so many things such as hunger, wildfire, famine,
diseases etc The poorer classes depended on handouts
from the rich and bread and grain from the local
officials.

Barbarians

The fall of Rome has no general acceptable story.
Historians believe that so many factors led to its
destruction. For some people they believe that
Barbarians caused Rome to fall, while others believe
that the Romans, Christianity or even Nature itself
caused it.
Some factors that
led to the fall of
Rome.
The Barbarians.

The barbarians were totally different from Romans.
They were a group uncultured people that sought to
dominate the Roman empire. They wanted gold, slaves
and every valuable thing they could get . There were
the barbarians of Goth,Franks,Vandels,Lombards.Etc

Consistently the Barbarians attacked the Roman empire,
until Emperor Theodosius decided to allow some of
them settle in Rome . However, they weren’t Loyal to
Roman empire. In the year 476AD,the Barbarian of Goth
deposed the last Roman emperor.
The Romans.

Some historians argued that the Romans destroyed
Roman empire themselves. For couple of reasons such
as Cash crisis as a result of too much Luxurious life, the
quest for the emperor title and the decline in the
Roman Army.
Christianity

As Roman empire progressed, they replaced the worship
of other gods to Christianity. The Christian religion had
different beliefs about war. While the Romans believe in
War, Christianity advocated for peace. The money
meant for developing the City was spent in building
Churchs. The time the emperors should have used to
plan the empire was spent in settling disputes among
Christians thus leaving the empire vulnerable.
Nature

Some historians believe that nature also caused the
downfall of Roman empire. Such as change in weather
or diseases.

The fall of the Roman empire is still a topic of argument
till today. Some historians believe that the empire was
never destroyed. Other Historians such as Edward
Gibbon believe that the combination of the above
factors led to the fall of Rome.
