The ethical principles as applied to research, EBP EBQI Reporter:Lingxia Song ID:2021C22099 INTRODUCTION The International Council of Nurses (ICN)and the American Nurses Association (ANA)have developed ethical codes to control the practice of the nursing profession.Whether providing nursing care or doing EBP projects or research, nurses must engage in moral, ethical activities. 1 Ethical Theories 2 Ethics and Evidence-Based Research CONTENTS 3 Emerging Ethical lssues in Research,EBP,and EBQI 01 Ethical Theories Ethical Theories Morality refers to “traditions or beliefs about right and wrong conduct"and is influenced by social and cultural practices, whereas ethics is“the study of social morality. Morality is what a person believes to be right and wrong and is shaped by what a person has been taught within society and her or his own culture. Ethical theories provide society with general guidelines for making decisions, but it is a person's moral philosophy that ultimately factors into the decision. “govern professional behavior" guides the practice of nursing and is“the promise that nurses are doing their best to provide care for their patients and their communities and are supporting each other in the process so that all nurses can Fulfill their ethical and professional obligations 02 Ethics and Evidence-Based Research Ethics and Evidence-Based Research The inappropriateness of the Ethical Safeguards Designed for Clinical Research to the Evidence-Based Practice While carrying out clinical research of any form, there are norms and the set standardsthat require the approval by a committee of experts before it commences. Such ethics ensure that the research is carried out in a professional manner and that the parties that will be subjected to research (the patients) make their sole decisions. The examples of the ethical safeguardsthat require to be adhered to prior to clinical research include: 1.engaging the patients to make informed consent; 2.avoiding any form of harm; 3.ensuring that the information gathered is kept confidential, and beneficence (Chakraborty, 2015). This leads to respect of the interests of the patient and that they can decide to optin being part of the research any time they would wish to. However, these ethical safeguards are not feasible when it comes to implementing the projects in need of evidence-based research. 03 Emerging Ethical lssues in Research,EBP,and EBQI The prevalence of EBP projects has caused much controversy about whether EBP and research are separate. One school of thought is that research is not a component of EBP;the other side,of course,is that research is one aspect of EBP. EBP and research much depends on the definition of each. Proponents of research argue that EBP is specific to an institution, has no theoretical framework, and data are not able to be statistically tested and analyzed. Proponents of EBP state that EBP is broader, includes research where appropriate, and that data collected from specific institutions can be compiled and added to national data banks providing information that has broad implications.Ethical considerations for both will continue to be required regarding protection of human subjects, regardless of the prevailing school of thought. the American Nurses Association and International Association of Clinical Research Nurses(2017),Young(2017),and Allmark(2015)all advocate for nurses to carefully examine ethical issues whether the projects are research EBP or EBQI.As technology improves and emphasis is placed on outcomes, nurses must be vigilant in conducting projects.
