Things to Keep in Mind
1. Obviously, to do this activity your class will need to view the movie Monster House.
2. Your students will need a poster board or some form of paper as the presentational
background.
3. Students are encouraged to add any enhancements to bring their poster to
life (as shown in the image below.)

Directions
Cut the dotted lines around the ‘Red Herring’ window so
the window flap opens. Also, cut the dotted lines around
the ‘Antagonist’ and ‘Motive’ window. The student’s answers
should be placed behind the flaps of the windows.
Cut the dotted lines to create the flaps, which become the
house’s teeth. Label the outside of the flaps, as indicated
on the master sheet. The answers go underneath the flaps.
Also, cut the dotted lines on the chimney. On the outside
of the chimney flaps label ‘Character’, ‘Setting’, and
‘Conflict’. On the inside, the students will label the
exposition’s information.
The climax is simply labeled next to the lightning bolt. Cut
the dotted lines on the sidewalk. Then, have the students
fill in the information requested on the master sheet on the
inside flaps. Make sure the students label the outside of the
flaps to indicate what will be seen when the flap is opened.

Mystery Review
On the following pages are mystery terms for review, along with a mystery assessment for the students.
v
It is up to the educator whether they’d like to do this before
or after the Monster House activity. Personally,
I like to give it as a pre and post test. This way the students (and teacher) can see growth in the
understanding of the mystery genre.
