Flat vs hierarchical structure: A flat structure has little or sometimes no layers of management
between boss and the employees. A certain authority of decision making is delegated to
employees to take advantage of their expertise. Whereas Hierarchical organisations are like
pyramids that have vertical chain of command. There is a CEO on the top and several levels of
management underneath. Following are some companies with flat and hierarchical structure.

GE is a multinational company operating through
four industrial and one financial segment. The former
chairmen of general electrics formulated the concept
of boundaryless organization to break down
boundaries that existed at the time between different
parts of the company.
It is a multi-divisional company working in more
than 100 countries and each division has its own
senior management teams. To bring flexibility and
adability in the work, a flat structure has been used.

Valves a computer game development company is a
boss-free organisation since 1996. There are no
managers and no centralized plans.
For the purpose of empowering employees to bring
ideas, select projects of their choice and make plans
to successfully complete projects chosen by them, it
uses decentralized flat structure.

Hierarchical
structure
Asda is one of the biggest supermarkets chain in
UK. It has formal hierarchical structure as the
organization has so many functional departments It
has large management layers and decisions are taken
by senior management. Employees share information
with other employees who report it to their bosses
and this chain continues until the information
reached to the top authority.
Motor Hierarchical
structure
Yamaha is a Japanese motor company consisting of a
CEO, Directors, managers and subordinates
respectively. Jobs are clearly defined and directed
towards employees. Since it is using a tall structure,
therefore Lower level of workforce is contractual by
nature and freedom of work is also low.
