Preparing your child for High School
Talk it up
Highschool can be very daunting for many children. You can help your child get excited by
talking up all the opportunities they will have there.
Chance to make new friends
Exciting new subjects to try out
Social events
Co-curricular clubs
Orientation
At we provide many opportunities for students to familiarise themselves with the High
School. We visit the library and have a tour with the current year 7’s as well as the whole
day at the beginning of 2021. Parents are also able to arrange extra tours if you feel it will
benefit your child. Please contact … to arrange this.
Sleeping
Teenagers body clock times – later to get tired and going to bed make sure trying to get to
bed at a reasonable hour. If your child doesn’t already have a regular routine, starting now
will make them more prepared for High School.
Don’t allow smart phones or tablets into bed. Active even with blue screen will make it
harder to get to sleep
Set a morning routine: alarm clock, shower, breakfast at the same time and out the door by
a certain time.
Looking after their equipment
Teenagers are notorious for losing and forgetting things, this is because their brains are
busty rewiring as the mature through puberty into adulthood. You can support your child
by helping them find strategies that suit them best. For example using a diary or smart
phone to set reminders on upcoming events, making lists of what they need for the day /
week ahead. Have them save passwords in a safe place that you can access if needed. Check
school emails and …….regularly with your child to make them aware of the different
platforms they can access information. Have extra sets of keys and
and check in with your child on a daily basis as to what needs signing, organising etc. have
an extra set of keys cut for bike locks, door keys clearly labelled.
Social Media
Set limits as to where and how much time your child spends on social media.
Homework
Year 7 students are set homework and depending on the class. At the beginning of the year
check the platforms that individual teachers use in High School.
Help your child arrange a quiet space in the house that is for homework, away from TV or
other distractions. Have them print out the weekly timetable and any other timetables or
roster e.g. sport, co-curricular that they may need to help them plan their week.
Check that the space has enough light for reading text books and space for the laptop and
writing materials.
Establish good homework habits from the start.
It depends very much on your family routine and what best suits your child. Homework
might be best completed straight away after school, after a break or after dinner. Whatever
suits your household, find a routine and try to stick to it as much as possible.
Independence
Work on giving your child independence with responsibilities to help them learn to manage
themselves. Students can be responsible for making their own lunch. Washing up their
lunch box. Weekly jobs that contribute to helping out around the house.
