Preparing your child for High School Talk it up Highschool can be very daunting for many children. You can help your child get excited by talking up all the opportunities they will have there. Looking after their equipment Teenagers are notorious for losing and forgetting things, this is because their brains are busty rewiring as the mature through puberty into adulthood. You can support your child by helping them find strategies that suit them best. For example using a diary or smart phone to set reminders on upcoming events, making lists of what they need for the day / week ahead. Have them save passwords in a safe place that you can access if needed. Check school emails and …….regularly with your child to make them aware of the different platforms they can access information. Have extra sets of keys and and check in with your child on a daily basis as to what needs signing, organising etc. have an extra set of keys cut for bike locks, door keys clearly labelled. Social Media Set limits as to where and how much time your child spends on social media. Homework Year 7 students are set homework and depending on the class. At the beginning of the year check the platforms that individual teachers use in High School. Help your child arrange a quiet space in the house that is for homework, away from TV or other distractions. Have them print out the weekly timetable and any other timetables or roster e.g. sport, co-curricular that they may need to help them plan their week. Check that the space has enough light for reading text books and space for the laptop and writing materials. Establish good homework habits from the start. It depends very much on your family routine and what best suits your child. Homework might be best completed straight away after school, after a break or after dinner. Whatever suits your household, find a routine and try to stick to it as much as possible. Independence Work on giving your child independence with responsibilities to help them learn to manage themselves. Students can be responsible for making their own lunch. Washing up their lunch box.
