IGNACIO JR Subject: The Teacher and The Community Course/Year/Major: BSED 2 Science War on Drugs: Economy Over Humanity Several years back, a lot of crimes involving the use and/or abuse of illegal drugs rose in the Philippines. This led to the proclamation of Republic Act 9165, otherwise known as the Comprehensive Dangerous Drug Act of 2002. It is a law that ensure the safety of the land, the nation, and the people from the negative effects of drugs. Alongside with Section 12, Paragraph 2 of the Article 3: Bill of Rights whereas: no torture, force, violence, threat, intimidation, or any other means which vitiate the free will shall be used against a person under investigation. This statement alone can stand with the reality that today, the use of other laws in oppressing the people is evident in the Philippines- case in point, extra judicial killings. Is R.A. 9165 effective? Killing of a person by governmental authorities or individuals without the sanction of any judicial proceeding or legal process has been prominent since the administration of Duterte arose. These killings have been reasoned out to halt the Filipino citizens in administering the proliferation of illegal drugs. Numerous people have surrendered to the government, but lots of them still died. The thing that made this social injustice worse, a great number of innocent people were killed and still seeking for justice at present times. Is R.A. 9165 still effective? Various descriptions of the content were stipulated in this law. One of which is Section 91: Responsibility and Liability of Law Enforcement Agencies and other Government Officials and Employees in Testifying as Prosecution Witnesses in Dangerous Drugs Cases. – whereas any member of law enforcement agencies or any other government official and employee who, after due notice, fails or refuses intentionally or negligently, to appear as a witness for the prosecution in any proceedings, involving violations of this Act, without any valid reason, shall be punished with imprisonment of not less than twelve (12) years and one (1) day to twenty (20) years and a fine of not less than Five hundred thousand pesos (P500,000.00), in addition to the administrative liability he/she may be meted out by his/her immediate superior and/or appropriate body. The government thereby turned a blind eye into this stipulation, favoring the over killings of the administration. Is R.A. 9165 still effective? The answer is YES. The law itself is effective in almost all its aspect, but unfortunately, disregarding humanity. From the descriptions given, the involvement of the people in securing won’s vicinity from illegal drugs is prevalent in some areas. Although some people still tend to get involved in serious illegal drug actions, majority of the Filipino citizens still abides the law which is hostile for us for we, the citizens are showing obedience whilst those who are seated, abuses their power. The enforcement should be done in an appropriate way to conserve and develop patriotism of the people. Hence, implementing laws in its full glory. Furthermore, it will open new opportunities for the people to take side with the government. R.A. 9165 is effective, yet augmenting social injustice.
