Perform Estimations or
Calculations to be done
According to the Job
Requirements
Lesson
1.2
This lesson will discuss how to perform basic estimations of different farm inputs.
What’s In
What are the procedures in reporting farm estimates?
_________________________________________________________________________
____________________________________________. Very good!
After you’ve followed the procedure in reporting to the appropriate person, we will now
consider what are the farm inputs that will be needed in the whole operation of the farm.
What’s New
Today, our government encourages everyone to Plant! Plant! Plant! as a flagship
program of the Department of Agriculture. It will help us to have a sustainable food supply.
Now a days, more people are engaging in agriculture. One of this is Abner. But Abner
is new in farming. He arrived months ago from the foreign land as retired domestic helper. He
bought a 2-hectare farm land as his investment. He wanted to develop his farm but knew little
in farm operation.
Will you please help Abner to estimate things he needs in farm inputs? Using this
module, we can share our knowledge to help Abner.
What is It
Farm Inputs
What are farm Inputs?
These are the different resources that are used in crop production.
8
Farm supplies – these are the essential materials needed in crop production. The number or
amount needed is very important to minimize unnecessary expenses.
Example:
Seeds - a mature ovule consisting of an embryonic
plant together with a stored food, all surrounded by a
protective coat. It is used to propagate plants easily.
Fertilizers – a substance that supplies nutrients to the
soil that are essential for the growth of a plant.
Pesticides – a substance used to kill pests.
Labor Inputs
These are the energy needed so that the production grows. Labor inputs also use tools and
equipment to make the labor easy and to secure the production activity.
1) labor requirement for land preparation such as:
* Mechanical plowing or plowing using a Carabao
* Mechanical harrowing or harrowing using a Carabao
2) Inputs in labor requirement in planting such as:
9
* Broadcasting the seeds
* Transplanting the seedling
3) Inputs in labor requirement for plant care such as:
* Applying fertilizers
* Applying pesticides
* Weeding
* Irrigating the farm
* Harvesting crops
* Threshing
* Drying
* Storing the harvested crops
In estimating those farm inputs, we need to know the situation of the farm such as the
land area, the necessary farm inputs in order to estimate the needed money and to allot the
budget correctly to run the production of the farm.
10
Example:
Abner has 2 hectares of farm. In estimating the needed inputs of Abner, list down all
farm inputs such as the needed farm supply and labor requirements in the whole farm
production. In terms of farm supply, make sure it will be multiplied to 2 hectares.
Note:
100 kl/ha seeds needed if transplanting or direct seeding using drum seeder.
200 kl/ha seeds if the seeds will be broadcasted.
After listing down all the needed farm inputs, you may now put the necessary amount
to each inputs. Compute the amount and you have now an estimate of a farm inputs.

What is It
Calculations of Different Farm Inputs and Labor Requirements
This section will discuss the techniques in calculating inputs in the operation of the farm.
Farm Supplies Computations
1. Seeds needed per hectare
Formula:
Total kilo of seeds= kilogram of seed
X land area
Note:
1 hectare is equal to 10,000 m2 (square meter).
100 kl/ha seeds are needed if transplanting or direct seeding using drum seeder.
200 kl/ha seeds are needed if the seeds will be broadcast
Given:
Abner has 2-hectare farm land. He wanted to used direct seeding using drum seeder. How
many seeds does he need? How much is it?
To compute:
Total kilo of seeds= kilogram of seed X land area
= 100 kl X 2 hectare
= 200 kl
To determine the price of seeds use the following formula.
Formula:
Total price of seeds= Price of seed/ kilogram
X
seeds needed per hectare
Given:
P20.00/kl of seeds
Abner has 2 hectares.
To compute:
Total price of seeds= Price of seed/ kilogram
= P 20.00/kl X 200 kl
= P 4,000.00
2. Total amount of fertilizer
16
X
seeds needed per hectare
Formula:
Total amount of fertilizer = Amount of fertilizer/kilogram
X No. of kilogram used
Example
Urea (46-0-0) unit price per kilogram is P40.00.
The Urea (46-00) used in fertilizing the plants is 250 kilograms.
To compute:
Total amount of fertilizer = Amount of fertilizer/kilogram
= 40 X 100
= P4,000.00
X No. of kilogram used
Labor inputs computations
3. Total amount of salary paid during land preparation
Formula:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
Given:
The no. of days labored is 3 days.
The no. of worker is 2.
The amount of salary per worker is P300.00.
To compute:
Total amount of salary= No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
= 3 X 2 X 300
= P1,800.00
4. Total amount of salary paid in planting the area
Formula:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
Given:
The no. of days labored is 4 days.
The no. of worker is 2.
The amount of salary per worker is P300.00.
To compute:
Total amount of salary = No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
= 4 X 2 X 300
= P2,400.00
17
5. Total amount of salary paid in fertilizing the area
Formula:
Total amount of salary= No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
Given:
The no. of days labored is 2 days.
The no. of worker is 2.
The amount of salary per worker is P300.00.
To compute:
Total amount of salary= No. of days labored X No. of worker X amount of salary/worker
= 2 X 2 X 300
= P1,200.00
5. Estimated irrigation expenses from planting to last harvest
Formula:
Irrigation expenses = Price of water/volume X No. volume
X Total no. of days
NOTE:
Volume is the content of a body or object measured in cubic meter (m 3).
Given:
The price of water is P 10.00/m3.
The number of volume of water used in irrigation is 120m3.
The total number of irrigation days is 4.
To compute:
Irrigation expenses = Price of water/volume X No. volume
= 10.00/ m3 X 120m3 X 4
= 10.00/ m3 X 120/m3 X 4
= 10 X 120
X 4
= 1,200 X
4
= P 4,800.00
X Total no. of days
6. Estimated cost of pesticide use for spraying
Formula:
Estimated cost = Price of pesticide X No. of pesticide/hectare X Total land area
NOTE:
Land area is measured using square meter (m2)
Example: 10,000 m2 is equivalent to 1 hectare.
18
Given:
The price of pesticide is P 300.00.
The no. of pesticide to be used per hectare is 1.
The total number of land area is 2.5 hectare.
To compute:
Estimated cost = Price of pesticide X No. of pesticide/hectare X Total land area
= 300.00
X
= 300.00
X
= P 750.00
1/ha

7. Workers’ salary during pesticide spraying
Formula:
Workers’ salary = Salary/day X Total no. days
Given:
The salary per day is P 300.00.
Total no. of days worked is 2.
To compute:
Workers’ salary = Salary/day X Total no. days
= 300.00 X 2
= P 600.00
8. Workers’ salary during weeding.
Formula:
Workers’ salary = Salary X Total no. worker
Given:
The salary per day is P 300.00.
Total no. of worker is 2.
To compute:
Workers’ salary = Salary X Total no. worker
= 300.00 X 2
= P 600.00
9. Workers’ salary during harvesting.
Formula:
Workers’ salary = Salary X Total no. worker X Total days of harvesting
19
What’s More
Given:
The salary per day is P 300.00.
Total no. of worker is 2.
Total days of harvesting is 2 days.
To compute:
Workers’ salary = Salary X Total no. worker X Total days of harvesting
= 300.00 X 2 X 2
= P 1,200.00
