Vocabulary Place value – the value a digit represents depending on its place in the number Example: the digit 6 represents the hundredths place Value – how much a digit is worth according to its place in a number Example: the value of the 6 is 0.06 (six hundredths) Digit – there are 10 digits: - 0 , 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, and 9 Rounding – reducing the digits in a number while trying to keep the value similar Comparing – seeing whether two numbers are greater than, less than, or equal to each other Whole Number – the counting numbers plus zero (0, 1, 2, 3, 4…) Greater than - > Less than - < Equal to - = NOT Equal to - Location is Everything!!! ● A number’s location determines its value. A 5 in the hundreds place has a value of 500, but a 5 in the ones place only has a value of 5. ● As you move to the left the value increases x 10; as you move to the right, the value decreases by dividing by 10. ● The decimal point separates the whole numbers and the decimal places. Decimals represent part of a whole (or a fraction of something). The decimal point is read as “AND”.
