Year 8 Intro to Laws of ALGEBRA Miss Huynh Today’s Learning Goals: ● ● ● You will understand how index laws are used to allow us to perform simplifications without writing out all the factors. You will be able to simplify expressions with the use of the index law. You will be able to simplify expressions by removing the brackets. 3 Index Law The index of a number says how many times to use the number in a multiplication. It is written as a small number to the right and above the base number. The plural of index is indices. 01 02 Meeting them Activities Expansion Law (raising a power to another power) We need law which allow us to simplify without brackets. We call these expansion laws. This law states that when raising a power to another power, the indices are multiplied. Simplify using the expansion law: 2 3 (5 ) = 5?x? = 5? = 15625 Which answer is correct? (hi) 2 a) b) c) d) hi hi + hi h2i2 h+h+h+h Complete the following questions from 6A Exercise 3 (p. 108) and 6B Exercise 1 (p. 111)
