Theme Notes
Theme is the main message/central idea conveyed in a story, piece of art, movie, etc.
● Usually has to do with life, society, or human nature. Many times we can recognize themes through
_________________________, or morals.
● The author does not tell us the theme directly, as readers, we need to ____________ it.
● Can sometimes be summed up in one word. Example: The theme of ________________________ is
___________________.
● Can sometimes be a common figure of speech or saying. Example: The theme of Beauty and the
Beast is “beauty lies within” or “don’t judge a book by it’s cover.”
● There can be multiple themes in a story.
Formula to find theme:
1. Jot down characters’ actions and feelings.
2. Connect __________________ based on these actions and feelings.
3. Ask: What does/has the character _______________________?
4. Ask: What ______________ from the text supports the development of this _____________?
HINTS:
● One way to find the theme is think about the lesson learned, then put it in your own words.
● Consider the conflict of the story. When a character faces a problem, most likely they will learn
something from it in the end.
