According to page one of the online textbook, “When gold was discovered at Sutter's Mill in 1848, people from all over the world traveled to California in search of riches. Those who arrived in 1849 were called forty-niners.” Before gold was discovered in California, there were barely a lot of people in California. Many people from all over the world came to California in search of gold. The 1849 gold rush also greatly affected California's population by increasing and diversifying it. Furthermore, on page 3 of the online textbook, “The Gold Rush had lasting effects on California. Agriculture, shipping, and trade grew to meet the demand for food and other goods. Many people who had arrived looking for gold stayed to farm or run a business.” During the gold rush, miners needed things such as tents, tools, and good clothes. Merchants and traders came in hope to supply those miners with them. This boomed California's economy and made it a good place for merchants. People with different occupation also came to California in the hopes of finding old and getting rich. After many found no gold they settled in California and started their own businesses. Hence, the discovery of gold helped develop California by boosting the economy and population.
