The XLPE cable has the construction of a conductor
(Copper or Aluminum) insulated with the cross-linked
polyethylene and then shielded with metallic screen
(Corrugated seam welded Aluminum or Lead sheath or
Wire shield) to be covered by PVC or polyethylene for
anti-corrosion.
CÊu tróc c¸p XLPE
C¸p XLPE cã cÊu tróc gåm lâi dÉn ®iÖn ®ång hoÆc
nh«m, c¸ch ®iÖn b»ng nhùa PE liªn kÕt ngang, tiÕp theo
lµ líp mµn ch¾n kim lo¹i (Nh«m gÊp nÕp hoÆc Ch× hoÆc
Sîi ®ång) vµ líp vá b¶o vÖ PE hoÆc PVC.
Conductor
Lâi dÉn
The conductor consists of annealed copper or hard
aluminum stranded wires and classified into two(2)
major types of compacted circular and segmental
compacted circular.
The compacted circular is the concentric wires wounded
up and then compacted. Normally segmental
compacted circular conductor has four(4) segments and
is applied for the cross-section over than 800mm2, to
prevent the increase of AC resistance caused by skin
effect. When the conductor’s cross-section is less than
630mm2 , the compacted circular is applied generally.
Lâi dÉn gåm nhiÒu sîi ®ång mÒm hoÆc nh«m cøng vµ
®­îc chia thµnh hai d¹ng lµ lâi nÐn trßn vµ nÐn rÎ qu¹t.
Lâi nÐn trßn gåm c¸c sîi quÊn ®ång t©m nÐn chÆt. Lâi rÎ
qu¹t th­êng ®­îc t¹o bëi bèn phÇn(04 segments) vµ
th­êng ¸p dông cho lâi cã tiÕt diÖn lín h¬n 800mm2,
nh»m ng¨n c¶n viÖc t¨ng ®iÖn trë xoay chiÒu g©y ra do
hiÖu øng bÒ mÆt.
Conductor screen
Mµn ch¾n lâi
The conductor screen consists of an extruded semiconducting polyethylene to minimize electrical stresses
due to the stranded configuration of the conductor. The
semi-conducting material used for conducting tape is
sometimes applied as a separator.
Mµn ch¾n lâi bao gåm líp nhùa PE b¸n dÉn ®Ó gi¶m
thiÓu øng suÊt ®iÖn g©y ra bëi bÒ mÆt kh«ng ®ång ®Òu
cña h×nh d¸ng lâi bÖn. VËt liÖu t¹o lªn mµn ch¾n b¸n dÉn
kh«ng lµm ¶nh h­ëng ®Õn lâi dÉn. B¨ng b¸n dÉn th­êng
®­îc dïng nh­ mét líp ng¨n c¸ch gi÷a lâi vµ mµn ch¾n
b¸n dÉn.
Insulation
C¸ch ®iÖn
The insulation material is extruded cross-linked
polyethylene. The conductor screen, the insulation and
the insulation screen mentioned to following clause are
extruded simultaneously in one process to ensure that
the screen and insulation are intimately bonded together
and free from all possibilities of voids between layers.
The extrusion process is carried out under strictly
controlled atmospheric conditions.
The thickness of insulation layer is the maximum value
figured out from the design of the impulse voltage and
A.C. Voltage.
The conventional cross-linking process by saturated
steam has frequently caused deterioration of the
electrical characteristics of the insulation as treeing
phenomena arose when put to use for long time. But the
new process by N2 gas has enabled to protect the
electrical characteristics from deteriorated and to lessen
the thickness of the insulation and accordingly the
cable’s outer diameter itself.
VËt liÖu c¸ch ®iÖn lµ nhùa PE liªn kÕt ngang(XLPE).
Mµn ch¾n lâi, c¸ch ®iÖn vµ mµn ch¾n c¸ch ®iÖn ®­îc
®ïn ®ång thêi trªn cïng mét d©y chuyÒn vµ liªn kÕt chÆt
chÏ víi nhau, ®¶m b¶o lo¹i bá hoµn toµn c¸c tói khÝ cã
kh¶ n¨ng sinh ra gi÷a c¸c líp.
C¸c th«ng sè vµ ®iÒu kiÖn ¸p suÊt lu«n ®­îc kiÓm so¸t
mét c¸ch chÆt chÏ trªn toµn bé quy tr×nh s¶n xuÊt.
ChiÒu dµy líp c¸ch ®iÖn lµ gi¸ trÞ lín nhÊt x¸c ®Þnh ®­îc
tõ viÖc thiÕt kÕ ®iÖn ¸p xoay chiÒu vµ ®iÖn ¸p xung.
Quy tr×nh liªn kÕt ngang b»ng h¬i n­íc th«ng th­êng
lu«n lµm gi¶m kh¶ n¨ng c¸ch ®iÖn do sinh ra hiÖn t­îng
d¹ng c©y sau mét thêi gian sö dông. C«ng nghÖ míi l­u
ho¸ kh« sö dông khÝ N2 ®­îc ¸p dông lµm t¨ng ®Æc tÝnh
c¸ch ®iÖn dÉn ®Õn gi¶m bít chiÒu dµy c¸ch ®iÖn còng
nh­ ®­êng kÝnh ngoµi cña c¸p.

Insulation screen

The insulation screen is provided over the insulation by
extruding the semi-conducting compound concentrically
and circularly to minimize the possibility of ionization on
the outer surface of the dielectric.

Metallic screen
Mµn ch¾n kim lo¹i
The metallic screen consist of the wire shield, the lead
sheath or the corrugated aluminum sheath. The
corrugated aluminum sheath and the lead sheath is also
adopted where the surface of duct is poor and where
moisture is high.
Mµn ch¾n kim lo¹i cã thÓ lµ mµn ch¾n sîi ®ång, líp vá
ch× hoÆc vá nh«m. Trong ®ã c¸p mµn ch¾n sîi ®ång kÕt
hîp l¸ nh«m cã ®­êng kÝnh nhá, ®Æc biÖt líp l¸ nh«m liªn
kÕt víi vá bäc phi kim lo¹i t¹o thµnh mét khèi thèng nhÊt
võa cã kh¶ n¨ng chèng n­íc theo chiÒu ngang võa mÒm
dÎo dÔ uèn cong nªn ®­îc ­a chuéng sö dông trong ®iÒu
kiÖn kh«ng gian l¾p ®Æt chËt hÑp. C¸p vá nh«m vµ vá ch×
th­êng ®­îc sö dông t¹i nh÷ng n¬i cã ®é Èm cao hay
v­ît s«ng.
Outer sheath
Vá bäc ngoµi
To protect the metallic sheath from electrical or chemical
corrosion, it is covered by PE or PVC.
Líp vá bäc bªn ngoµi b»ng nhùa PE hoÆc PVC ®­îc sö
dông ®Ó b¶o vÖ líp vá bäc kim lo¹i vÒ mÆt ®iÖn hay sù ¨n
mßn ho¸ häc.

Manufacturing Process
Quy tr×nh s¶n xuÊt
D©y chuyÒn dïng ®Ó bäc c¸ch ®iÖn cho c¸p XLPE cao
thÕ lµ CCV c«ng nghÖ míi xo¾n liªn tôc vµ liªn kÕt
ngang b»ng khÝ N2. §Æc tÝnh næi bËt cña d©y chuyÒn lµ:
(1) §é ®ång t©m cao t­¬ng tù d©y chuyÒn VCV do c«ng
nghÖ xo¾n liªn tôc.
(2) Liªn kÕt ngang b»ng khÝ N2 ®¶m b¶o tÝnh chÊt ®iÖn
cña c¸ch ®iÖn cao
(3) ViÖc ®ïn ®ång thêi líp b¸n dÉn trong, ngoµi vµ líp
c¸ch ®iÖn cho phÐp lo¹i bá kho¶ng chèng gi÷a c¸c
líp, c¸c hiÖn t­îng h×nh c©y, ®é låi lâm vµ t¹p chÊt
trong toµn bé quy tr×nh.
(4) ChÊt l­îng ®ång ®Òu ®­îc ®¶m b¶o duy tr× trªn tÊt
c¶ c¸c s¶n phÈm do quy tr×nh s¶n xuÊt ®­îc kiÓm
so¸t b»ng m¸y tÝnh.
The system adopted for insulation of the super tension
XLPE cable is CCV and N2 gas is used for cross linking,
and the line is extruded in a catenary type. The
outstanding characteristics of the super tension XLPE
Cable manufactured in application of this system are:
(1) The insulation has no eccentricity
(2) The cross-linking by use of N2 gas guarantees
excellent electrical characteristics of the insulation
(3) The simultaneous extrusion of the inner and outer
semi-conducting layers and the insulation
minimizes of voids and prevents treeing and other
irregularities
(4) Uniformity of quality is maintained of all products as
the manufacturing processes are controlled by
computer.

Permissible Short Circuit Currents
Dßng ®iÖn ng¾n m¹ch cho phÐp
The permissible short circuit current of a cable is
determined by the maximum permissible conductor
temperature and by the duration of the short circuit
current. At high peak currents, the dynamic forces
between the conductors must be taken into account.
The short circuit capacity of the conductor and metallic
shield of a cable are related principally to their heat
capacities and are limited by the maximum temperature
permitted under short circuit XLPE power are as follow.
From the two graphs, the short circuit capacity of copper
or aluminum conductors(based on a temperature rise
from 90oC to 250oC) can be determined.

Accessories for EHV Cable Systems from LS Cable & System Korea

LS Cable & System has developed and manufactured a
wide range of terminations and joints are for extra High
Voltage(EHV) cable system since 1983. Prefabricated
terminations and tape molded joints are installed for
154kV cable system in Korea. A new advanced
accessories, which is called prefabricated and
premolded joints, were developed and supplied many
countries in the world. Cable systems from 132kV up to
500kV has been certified through the type test by many
international independent institutes (KEMA, CESI,
KERI).
LS Cable & System Hµn Quèc ®· ph¸t triÓn vµ s¶n xuÊt
réng r·i ®Çu nèi vµ hép nèi cho hÖ thèng c¸p cao
thÕ(EHV) tõ n¨m 1983. C¸c ®Çu nèi ®óc s½n vµ hép nèi
khu«n b¨ng ®­îc l¾p ®Æt cho hÖ thèng c¸p 154kV trong
thÞ tr­êng néi ®Þa. Nh÷ng phô kiÖn c¶i tiÕn míi ®­îc gäi
lµ hép nèi khu«n vµ hép nèi ®óc s½n, ®· ph¸t triÓn vµ
cung cÊp cho rÊt nhiÒu quèc gia trªn thÕ giíi. HÖ thèng
c¸p tõ 132kV lªn tíi 500kV ®· ®­îc cÊp chøng nhËn thö
nghiÖm ®iÓn h×nh bëi c¸c phßng thö nghiÖm quèc tÕ nh­
(KEMA, CESI, KERI).

Outdoor Terminations
§Çu nèi ngoµi trêi
The outdoor terminations for 66~230kV are available for
both the EPR-based rubber stress relief cone with an epoxy
housing (so called pre-fabricated type) and the silicone
rubber sleeve (so called pre-molded type).
The former uses mechanical devices to maintain the
interface pressure and the latter uses elastic retention of
silicone material itself.
In both cases, the main insulation components are fully
examined and tested in the factory. The maximum allowable
cable conductor size is 2500mm2.
Upon request of the customer, either porcelain or composite
hollow insulator can be supplied.

Oil - Immersed Terminations

Epoxy Insulator
The construction of oil immersed terminations is based on
the EPR-based stress relief cone and the epoxy housing.
The main insulation components are fully examined and
tested in the factory.
Dimensions of base plate are complying with IEC 60859 and
possibly adjusted to various needs of customers.
The maximum allowable cable conductor size is 2500mm2.

Pre-Molded Joint (PMJ)
The single piece pre-molded type rubber joint is silicone insulation embedded with two semi-conductive stress relief
cones and one high voltage electrode. Without any mechanical devices, the interface pressure is safely maintained with
elastic retention of material itself. The main insulation components are factory-made and fully tested before delivering to
the site.
The cost-efficient and simplified design along with easy and fast installation meets the various needs of customers.
Installation tools can be provided if requested by customers.

Link boxes are used at the end of cable termination to
gain easy access to the cable metallic sheath and to
limit the transient over-voltage induced on the metallic
sheath by light, switching operations and fault
currents. Cross bonding(C.B) link boxes allow metallic
sheath to be transposed at cable joints with surge
voltage suppression and reduction of circulation
current. Sheath voltage limiters (SVLs) in link box are
the gapless ZnO arresters, which have the insulation
resistance above 100MΩ at test voltage so that the
sheath insulation can be checked without
disconnecting SVLs.
