Analyzing the Parts of a Research Paper (IMRAD)
Task 1: Write the title of the research proposal and the research questions.
Our research proposal is entitled "The Effects of Online Academic Learning to Silliman
University’s First Year Engineering Students’ Academic Performance." Through this study we
aim to know how the sudden shift from face-to-face classes to online distance learning has
affected freshmen students academically. And it aims to answer the following questions: first,
how did online academic learning affect freshmen engineering students' academic
performance? Second, what are the problems faced by the first year engineering students
brought by online distance learning? And lastly, what are the areas/strategies to improve and
work best for engineering students in online distance learning?
Task 2: Write a short summary of the proposal. Make sure to include the problem under
investigation, the thesis, the participants of the study (interviewees and respondents) and a brief
description of some of the related studies. Limit your summary to 150-250 words.
Due to the threat in our health brought by the COVID 19, schools and universities had to
resort to another mode for learning. Online Distance Learning has changed the classroom
experience for students thus affecting their academic performance. In a study by Adnan and
Anwar (2020), "for underdeveloped countries, online distance learning cannot produce desired
results in their student’s classroom experiences." Although the Philippines is a developing
country, factors contributing to unsatisfactory learning during ODL in their study can also be
observed here such as lack of access to fast and affordable internet connection, lack of proper
interaction with instructors, educational contents and resources materials not compatible for
online delivery. And so, we, the researchers want to know how online distance education has
impacted the academic performance of freshmen Engineering students in Silliman University.
Respondents for this study will be selected through random sampling and will be from the
College of Engineering and Design of Silliman University, first year students. Data will be
gathered from their response in our survey questionnaire which will then be synthesized and
analyzed with the use of graphic representation and textual description to answer the research
questions in order to arrive at a conclusion.
