Lesson Plan
Date: October 2nd, 2020
Time:10:30-12:15
Class: 3-2
Duration of Lesson: 90 mins
Age Range: 9 -10
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: 2D shapes
Objectives:
1. Identify the properties of 2D shapes.
2. Construct a drawing using 2D shapes.
3. Volunteer to show a drawing stating which 2D shapes were used.
4. Point out examples of 2D shapes in everyday life.
Teaching Methods/Strategies:
Textbook Recitation, Discussion
Resources/Technologies:
Bright Sparks Textbook, 2D shapes Worksheet
Set Induction:
Draw several 2D shapes on the whiteboard and ask students what all these
shapes has in common. Allow students to give feedback on what they think
the shapes have in common.
Learning Activities/ Learning Experiences:
1. Let students examine shapes carefully guide them towards
recognizing all the shapes have a length and a width and that is what
makes them 2 dimensional. Reinforce to students the two dimensions
all the shapes have is a length and a width.
2. Let students know today we will be examining Two Dimensional
Shapes / Polygons and their properties.
3. Have students turn to pg 115 in their Bright Sparks Notes and read
note on polygons and have a discussion.
4. Illustrate to students how to find the number of corners / vertices and
sides of a 2D shape.
5. Have students do this for other 2D shapes.
6. Ask students to create a drawing using 2D shapes and present the
drawing to the class highlighting which shapes they used.
Assessment Procedures:
Have students complete 2D shapes worksheet using Bright Sparks Textbook as a guide.
Closure:
Ask students to look around classroom and state several examples of 2D shapes that they can
see.
Follow up Activities:
Have students complete exercise in Bright Sparks Textbook pg 116

Class: 3-2
Age Range: 9 -10
Subject: Mathematics
Topic: 2D shapes
Objectives:
1. Identify the properties of 3D shapes.
2. Volunteer to assist a classmate with discovering examples of 3D
shapes in everyday life.
Teaching Methods/Strategies:
Lecture Recitation, Discussion
Resources/Technologies:
Bright Sparks Textbook, 3D shapes Worksheet, 3D shapes YouTube Video
Set Induction:
Remind students of the 2D shapes that were examined last week and ask
them to give some examples. Let students know that this week we will be
looking at 3D shapes and they are different to 2D shapes because they have
thickness.
Learning Activities/ Learning Experiences:
1. Let students watch 3D shapes YouTube Video as students watch video pause at
specific moments and ask students certain questions on information that was given.
2. Use these pauses to reinforce to students certain information you want them to pay
attention to in order to fill out 3D shapes worksheet.
3. After students have watched video go over the properties of 3D shapes and ask
selected students to state examples of 3D shapes in their everyday lives.
Assessment Procedures:
Have students complete 3D shapes worksheet and remind them of the different properties of
3D shapes and how to go about finding each.
Closure:
Ask selected students to state the properties of some of the shapes on the worksheet and
remind students these shapes are in our everyday lives.
Follow up Activities:
Bright Sparks Textbook Pg 120
