The Good • He reformed the calendar, which was badly out of sync. He set up the months we use now. • He never lost a war and even helped Rome’s Civil War end. • He created the first news sheet, which was posted on the forum for everyone to read. Of course, he controlled the information and very few people could read. The Good • He gave citizenship to more people. • He made parks available to the poor. • In his will, he left money to every citizen of Rome. • He redistributed land and jobs to employ the poor. • Conquered France, Spain, and Southern Britain for Rome. The Bad • He was very vain and named one of the months after himself. • He takes other men’s wives for himself. • He bribed governors to do his will. • He established a network of spies to protect himself. • He reduced the powers of the Senate so as to make it an advisory council only. Ugly • He put his own image on the money; a great sign of vanity. • He killed women and children in battle; he had 20,000 women and children starved to death. • He killed or enslaved a third of the population of those he defeated. • When he defeated the French, he cut off the hands of those defeated to demoralize them. Ugly • He walked around town in a purple toga and a crown to remind everyone that he was king -- an act not done before. • He turned his back against his former ally Pompey to conquer Rome. • The Senate warned Caesar to stop marching on Rome. He refused. This created civil war in Rome • He had a child with Cleopatra. Romans feared an Egyptian would become their next emperor.
