Write your answers in your notebook. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Wearing a Louis Vuitton designed face mask Teachers planting vegetables during pandemic Online selling of basic shopping products Teenagers wearing big earrings Mayors providing school supplies to public school students PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 6 What is a trend? A trend is generally a direction which tells that something is developing or changing. The common word one may hear especially in social media is the word “trending”. In businesses, it usually indicates an upward direction in sales or in profit while in social media, it connotes something that is becoming popular or acceptable to the general population. Fad (Uso), on the other hand, is an intense and enthusiasm for something widely shared by people of common interest that could also be short-lived. one that is short-lived. It may also be considered a craze or kinahuhumalingan in Filipino language. It is a collective behavior which is often sudden too quick to spread but most of the time short-lived. Fads may include foods, clothing, hairstyles, habits, toys and hobbies or past times. Trends and fads should not be mistaken as the same. They may have similarities but they are exactly different and may sometimes mislead decision makers. They may play a very important role in an organization or business but they should be considered separately. Remember that fads are short-lived while trends get stronger over time. What brings a trend? To answer that question, there is a need to know first the basic elements or characteristics of a trend. A. Idea or Innovation. Ideas may be too many out there but people these days always look for something new---that is innovation. These may refer, for example, to old problems adopting new solutions or new problems having old solution---still an innovation. When people hear something, they always look for the idea behind. Reasonable and acceptable ideas may provide useful knowledge and may bring new ideas when combined with another lead to excellent innovative ideas. B. Consistency. When these ideas are introduced, acceptability is consistently increasing among people. They find it applicable as solution or answer to their situation. It does not immediately fade but rather develops a growing interest among people and stay as part of culture for a longer time possible. C. Impact. It brings change and develops people and systems. It has a lasting effect on organizations and business systems and is becoming more widely acceptable to majority of people expecting to benefit from it. An example of a trend that develops great impact is the use of the ATM in banking. Today, it has expanded into online banking. How to spot a trend? Primarily, to consider it a trend, there should be the presence of all these elements. But to spot an idea that would develop into a trend could be difficult especially for business organizations or marketing agencies trying to introduce something new in the field that will make a difference in the way they do business. Here are some of the guidelines. 1. Identify the opportunity. When one sees something new, or an idea 7 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON arising, he/she has to consider the opportunities ahead. Questions like What opportunities can I take with the new idea? or How can this idea bring a good opportunity for many people? are good points to consider. Even problems or bad situation create good opportunity to improve and develop. It could grow into trend. 2. Reflect on your own. What do you have at the moment? Look outside your business and see what they are doing. They may be using things that you do not use yet and find them useful. When they adapt the trend, would you do it the same way they would do things or find your own means of doing it? Could you be of the same level or would you think ahead and be a leader of the trend? 3. Be well informed. Follow social media, blogs and website. They may provide you information on what the hot issues are, the talk of the town, the latest craze and what makes the people react more. Follow certain people like politician, educators or celebrities. They can provide meaningful insights and information on what acceptable ideas are. They could also give business organizations and marketing strategists new sense of understanding the changing public perceptions. 4. Explore the social media. Find your friends, relatives, business partners and even competitors. Find what they follow, what they like and what interests them. Use social media to see what gets viral, the fads, and find out how you could get in the situation and be part of the trend. 5. Be careful with the information. Not all information give you the truth. Others are deceiving; some are misleading. Trust a second opinion. It will help. Consult an expert and find reliable information. Learning Task 3: Analyze the situation and answer the statement that follows in your notebook. A YouTube video about two celebrities quarrelling about money was first uploaded on May 15, 2020. In 24 hours, there are already more than 500,000 views. On May 20 of the same year, the number of views doubled and continues to increase by the end of the month. Cite at least three (3) factors for the increase in viewership. Explain these factors. continuous 1. ______________________________________________________________ 2. ______________________________________________________________ 3. ______________________________________________________________ PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 8 E Learning Task 4: Using the given case in Learning Task 3, is it a trend or a viral post? Give three reasons for your answers. Do this in your notebook. Learning Task 5: In your notebook, identify a trend in education and describe it. A Learning Task 6: Define “trend” and “fad” in your own words. Present their characteristics in a graphic organizer. Learning Task 7: Using a Venn diagram, illustrate the similarities and differences between trends and fad. Fad Trend I understand that ___________________________________________________________ I realize that ________________________________________________________________ 9 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON WEEK 2 Parts of a Whole: Emerging Pattern I Lesson Through this lesson, you will understand the emergence of trends and patterns. After the lesson, the learners will be able to derive an idea from instances. Further, you are expected to: identify parts of a whole; identify and explain an emerging pattern; and identify causes and consequences. Learning Task 1: During the first month of the Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), one would see people in the social media planting vegetables in their own backyard. Halfway through July, most people shifted from planting vegetables to ornamental plants. Discuss the causes of such shift and its consequences. Do this in your notebook. D Learning Task 2: Do a simple recall of the following concepts. Describe them based on your own understanding. Do this in your notebook. 1. Parts of the whole 2. Emerging Pattern of trends 3. Principle of causality Part of The Whole In order to understand things better, there is a need to dig deeper trying to identify the parts of the whole. A trend is characterized by many as a elaborate thing that makes the whole idea of the trend working and producing an emerging pattern. Just as the totality of the person is being examined, there is also a need to look at the small segments of every event or situation that keeps it progressing to develop trends. Early thinkers like Plato and Aristotle made a considerable discussion about parts of the whole. Their ideas were later re-examined and intensified by later thinkers. For Karl Marx, “the overall strategy of scientific knowledge, as it develops in any given period, is determined to a significant extent by the particular treatment of the categories of the part and the whole and the specific interpretation of the related question of wholeness.” Understanding the parts of the whole is very important as it gives a clear view of the basic elements that make up a whole. A wrong connotation of its part may mislead a decision maker and could encourage him/her to question and not adapt the emerging trends. For example, if one looks at the approaches used by different countries in addressing the pandemic, one may find a strategy that works in a country while failing in another. In this case, there is a need to look at the totality of the strategy surrounding the implementation. That includes considerations like political, economic, social factors, culture, etc. because they are the parts that make up the whole system. PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 10 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Emerging Patterns Emerging patterns refer to items in which frequency are changing overtime. They are important indicators that set the progressive movement of data to understand the distinctive direction to where the trend is heading. For research and businesses, it is an important basis that manifests the practicability of the new sets of action. For example, data of spread of COVID -19 shows that infection is increasing in the workplace rather than in the community. The Department of Health (DOH), using the emerging pattern of spread of the infection, can adopt a new strategy for containing the virus and preventing further transmission. Most patterns are presented in graphs or charts to make it easier for people to understand the pattern. Data patterns of trends can be classified as follows: A. Linear. It follows a straight line in graphical presentation which could indicate an upward or downward direction. B. Exponential. It is a trend represented by a line that that may rise or fall shortly at a given time unsteadily. Data change overtime caused by different factors that may affect progression. C. Damped. This shows that values rise and fall initially and then stop the rise and fall for sometime and then rise or fall again. Causality It is a generally accepted principle that there is the cause for everything that happens. That is the principle that every cause produces a consequence. It influences an event, process or state which is the cause that contributes to the production of another event, process or state which is an effect or consequence. The cause is partly responsible for the consequences and the consequences are partly dependent on the causes. What causes the emergence of the trends should be taken and examined as a whole considering its smallest element or parts. That causes may be intensified by intervening factors to produce a desirable progress that characterizes a progressing or failing trends. The resulting changes is the effect or the consequences. The emerging trend for online learning is beginning to develop caused by the pandemic brought by the COVID-19. Educators, students and school administrators will design strategies to make learning more effective. The trend may suddenly be stopped when the government adopts the face-to-face learning modality when the vaccine for COVID-19 becomes available. Learning Task 3: Read, analyze and illustrate the given case. Then, answer the question that follows. Do this in your notebook. A worker from Manila came home to his barangay in Batangas City. In five (5) days, his elder with and asthma experienced body pain and sore throat, his mother had fever. In three (3) weeks, there were 150 cases of COVID 19 in the whole barangay. How did it spread that fast? Using the part of a whole premise, why did fast in that community? 11 the virus spread too PIVOT 4A CALABARZON E Learning Task 4: If you were the barangay captain of a community suffering from a fatal virus, how would you prevent the spread of that virus? Write your answer in your notebook. A Learning Task 5: Identify the possible causes and effects of the continuous spread of COVID-19. Then, answer the question that follows. Do this in your notebook. Example: returning home - bringing the virus Causes Effects 1. 2. 3. As a member of the community, what is your role in preventing the emerging pattern of COVID -19 infection? PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 12 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON Strategic Analysis and Intuitive Thinking Lesson I In this lesson, you will understand strategic analysis and intuitive thinking. Also, you will be able to draw a color-coded map of the networks of power relations (political, economic, cultural, and kinship ties) within a particular community. At the end of the lesson, you are expected to: explain strategic analysis and intuitive thinking; apply strategic analysis; and apply intuitive thinking in solving a problem in the community using a map of social networks. Learning Task 1: Take a look at the picture and examine its details. In your notebook, construct a descriptive paragraph about the picture. Also, answer the questions that follow. Source: https://www.interaksyon.com/politicsissues/2019/09/03/154425/slave-to-sachets-how-poverty-worsensplastics-crisis-philippines/ Guide Questions: 1. What do the children do? 2. Do you think they have access to education? 3. How can the government and other social institutions help them? D Whenever people are faced with different kinds of problems, it is very crucial to think of means of addressing them and preventing those circumstances from happening again. But solutions are greatly influenced by the manner in which one defines the problem and adopts a solution based on his/her own understanding. There are basically two different perspectives in addressing the problem. 1. Analytical thinking is a kind of logical thinking that addresses the problems or issues by breaking it into its component parts. It uses scientific methods of research and adopts frameworks or models to solve the problems. Managers, especially those running big companies or projects, tend to use this thinking strategy to pursue changes in directing plans and 13 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON WEEK 3 goals. Analytical thinking focuses and deals with concerns at a particular time. It also contains time, is deconstructive, but is subject to disorientation, braincentered and tends to the abstract. It is considered efficient in the following conditions: sufficient time, relatively static conditions, a clear differentiation between the observer and the observed. It is best suited for dealing with complexities, and works best where there are established criteria for analysis (for example, rules of law). It is requires an explanation, seeks the best option, and can be taught in classroom to beginners. 2. Intuitive thinking is the kind of thinking that helps one understand reality by perception or intuition without logic or analysis. It derived its confidence from experiences. There are no analytical steps or methods but based its action from observed indicators in the organizational environment. It allows individual to develop his own mode of solution in addressing strategic issues. Intuitive approaches are personal and custom-made. It sometimes derived a problem-based solution that is not quite easy to share and at times too difficult to copy or adapt. Managers utilized the power of persuasion to get people agree rather than the logical sense of coming up with an action. Intuition works best where the observer has the same experience in the particular situation. It is difficult to teach in the classroom, has the tendency to work on feelings in favour of a more workable solution. Intuition is experience translated by expertise to produce rapid action. Charles Parselle, founding partner of Centers for Excellence in Dispute Resolution - CEDRS.COM , presented his comparison of the components of Analytical and Intuitive thinking. ANALYTICAL INTUITIVE Time Static Linear One thing Small picture Focused Deliberative No perspective Classroom taught Objective Best option Needed when explanation required Deconstructive Object differentiation Objective/subjective differentiation Brain-centered Disoriented Abstract Historically new Lawyers No time Dynamic Non-linear Many things Big picture Non-focused Instantaneous Perspective Experience taught Subjective Workable option Needed when action required Constructive Pattern matching No clear objective/subjective Heart-centered Oriented Concrete Historically old Firefighters PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 14 Analytical process usually involves the following steps: A. Identifying the problems and the issues surrounding them. B. Information gathering or Data collection C. Developing and Proposing solutions D. Trying out solutions or new ideas based on data collection E. Evaluating if the solutions worked and taking necessary measures. E Learning Task 2. From the problem presented in Learning Task 1, make a step by step proposal that will address the children’s situation using the analytical thinking methods presented. Do this in your notebook. A. Identify the problems and the issues surrounding them. B. Gather Information or Collect Data C. Develop a Proposal for Solutions D. Try out solutions or new ideas based on data collection (An Assumption) E. Evaluate the solutions and take necessary measures Learning Task 3: Study the given case and proposed an intuitive thinking based solution. Do this in your notebook. Mr. Gonzales just return from abroad after recovering from COVID 19 infection. A mechanical engineer by profession, he decided to stay and work in the Philippines for good. But it will take him 1 year before he can work again. He has 2 high school and a primary school children in an exclusive school. His savings are almost depleted because part of his medication and expenses of returning home is not shouldered by the company he is serving. If you are Mr. Gonzales, what Intuitive thinking based solution would you consider and why? Overtime, it has created new jobs and economic growth through cross-border flow of goods, capital and labor. This results to open competition for commerce and trades as barriers in terms of taxes and custom tariff and duties are eased. Free flow of goods and labor among countries is intensified expecting overall economic growth and political cooperation. Socially, globalization leads to open communication and greater interaction among populations of different countries. It facilitates for exchange of ideas, values and artistic expression among cultures as evident by sending of scholars and technoctrats and promotion of tourism. This trend is aimed at developing a common culture among the world population. Intraand inter-government organizations also begin to be strengthened by the international community. Advantages A. Climate Change E. Global Warming 20 PIVOT 4A CALABARZON PIVOT 4A CALABARZON 26 Weather tells the environmental condition in a specific place. It can be rainy, sunny, windy or snowy, etc. Climate describes the weather conditions expected in a particular place in a specific time of the year. Climate change refers to the significant change in the average conditions of temperature and rainfall in a particular region over a long period of time. It is already happening in our planet even before it is inhabited by humans but scientists have observed that changes nowadays are too unusual, making them more alarmed. For over 20,000 years, much of the European regions were covered with glaciers. Today, climate all over Europe is quite warmer compared to its condition 20,000 years ago. Globally, warming temperatures and changes in precipitation are observed. The results of all these climatic changes include: A. sea levels rising, B. fewer mountain glaciers, C. faster melting of the ice in Greenland, Antarctica and the Arctic, and D. changes in flower and plant blooming times. A lot of factors are contributory to the global climate change but scientists have agreed that human activities have been the biggest contributor to such change. Burning fuel in factories, cars and buses affects the earth’s natural greenhouse. The heat of the planet is trapped in the atmosphere making the Earth warmer. This phenomenon is called the greenhouse effect. Both production and consumption of goods contribute to global warming. Production as in manufacturing utilizes technology that emits large amount of carbon in the atmosphere. Distribution of goods such as shipping and storage in warehouses and distribution centers also produces hydrofluorocarbons that contribute to the greenhouse effect. Consumption produces wastes especially non–biodegradable one that pollutes the atmosphere when disposed through burning which also releases carbons. Disadvantages A. Failing economy will have a domino effect on its trading partner in another counter. This is evident among the European Union in which bail-out was made to save an economically failing nation. B. Wealth and power are concentrated in the hands of small group of corporate elite putting smaller competitors in disadvantageous situation resulting to weakening of their business capability that usually ends up selling their business to bigger companies.
