Dan Jared E. Origines BSA-2 Laudato Si’ Reflection paper By 2030 I have envisioned a world that takes a great leap forward to sustainability and Peace. As what we have observed these days, the world is becoming more careless and treat the resources of our planet as if it was infinite. We live in a world where we have no care for the next generations and tend to live as if we don’t need to leave something for them. My vision for 2030 is that we would change our self-destructing ways and aim towards a more sustainable and greener solution in order to achieve relative harmony to man and nature. It is evident to us that our common home is getting poisoned by our greed. We mine the earth and strip it of its riches and dump endless garbage to the oceans, we cut trees and leave no home for god’s precious creations. I look forward to stopping our selfish ways and aim for a better tomorrow. Pope Francis’ letter talks about how we should treat our common home properly. There are a lot of messages in it but the ones that touched me most are (1) That we have treated the earth like it has an unlimited amount of resource, taking more than our fair share for most of the people in the planet as well as for generations to come. We should live a simple life, take only what we need and help those in need. (2) we have stripped the earth of its natural forests, contaminated the earth’s waters, its land and its air. Plants and Animals are becoming extinct at an alarming rate. We should step towards a way where we preserve the beauty of god’s gift and nurture it. (3) We are now at a crisis where the future of our common home is under threat, but in this crisis, there seems to be no slow down of the lifestyles of the rich nations where enormous gaps between the rich and the poor continue to rise between those who are trapped in poverty with no resources and those who are consuming and wasting at an ever increasing rate. Leaving a trail of waste and destruction. Again, we should be mindful of our consumption and lessen our wants and only adhere to our needs in order to have space to help others in poverty. (4) Our digital world is also polluting us with noise and distractions, stopping us from learning how to live wisely, to think deeply, and love generously. Real relationships are replaced with virtual friends which we can choose to accept or reject making us dissatisfied with true deep relationships or can give rise to a new sense of isolation. (5) Young people demand change, where we take the environmental crisis seriously and hear the cries and sufferings of the poor. We have the power to change the world and make it a better place not only for you and me but also for the plants and animal that we exist with. They, as living creatures, have every right to call earth home and they deserve to live peacefully without the pollution we’ve made. Social entrepreneurship can be the answer to the cries of Laudato Si’, as SOEN teaches us to implement solutions on social, cultural and environmental issues. This especially works for us as business courses as we will consultants and managers in the future, we could be the ones to spearhead the step towards a change where we work and in hand to take care of our common home. We could bring SOEN’s teaches to the corporate environment and help influence one another for a change of our once selfish ways and move hand in hand to a more sustainable and greener future where we build a home for every human, plant and animal in this planet and live in it in unison and expel the greed that has once corrupted our society.
