EXISTING CONTROL MEASURES
Ensure lighting level is adequate to undertake the task
Staff are instructed not to use makeshift steps (chairs / tables etc)
Staff to ensure access equipment is adequate for height. Kick stool provided for users to access
display areas safely. Step ladder provided to access areas safely (where more height is required
than can be achieved with a kick stool)
Where use of ladders is required this should only be undertaken by qualified staff
All access equipment suitable for purpose, checked before use and maintained in good condition
Reporting procedure in place for identified defective items with prompt removal and remedial action
Use of access equipment restricted to those trained and competent in use
Do not leave equipment unattended to avoid unauthorised use
Restrict displays to head height where practical
Ensure displays / boards are accessible. Displays to be prepared as far as possible before putting
them up
Consider putting up displays during quiet times / out with school hours
Staff to reposition kick stool rather than overstretch
Staff to wear appropriate footwear (low heeled, non slip shoes) when using kickstool
Do not stand on tables or chairs to do this work. Ensure the right equipment is used
For further information see protocol for ‘Working at Height’
Floor surfaces suitable to use kick stool (firm and even surface)
Ensure floor area is free from slips and obstructions
Immediate cleaning up of spillages – erect appropriate signs
For further information please see risk assessment and protocol for ‘Slips and Trips’
Location and quantity of display materials on escape routes should be kept under control because
the cardboard, paper and plastic can result in rapid fire spread
Ensure display material must be kept away from curtains, doors and heat sources so that fire cannot
easily spread to the building fabric
Ensure displays do not obstruct escape routes or obscure fire notices, alarm call points, fire fighting
equipment, emergency exit signs or lights
For further information please see protocol on ‘Fire Safety’
Manual
handling
Ensure staff are made aware of correct lifting techniques to reduce risk of injury
Ensure appropriate footwear worn
For further information please see protocol for ‘Manual Handling’
