Lets look at the course topics.
What will you need to complete for
assessments?
How will the classes run?
Session Objectives


S.O.1: By the end of the session
students understand the course
requirements i.e. course outline,
required commitment, key
timelines, assessments
S.O.2: By the end of the session,
students can confidently determine,
measure and describe dimensions
Level 6
25 Credits
While WelTec no longer awards unit standards, this course aligns with
the above standard and by completing this course you will have meet
the requirements of it.
If you chose to you could apply to have this unit standard awarded to
you.
We align the course with the unit standard as this would likely make
it easier to transfer to another polytechnic to carry on working
towards this qualification if you chose to.
After completing this course you will be able to:
Describe the site.
Determine and describe the foundations and substructure.
3. Develop and describe the passive fire protection
system.
4. Determine and describe the structure of a building
of specific design.
5. Determine and describe the envelope of a building
and the methods used to construct the interior of a
building.
1.
2.
These are the topics within the course
description.
There are 6 assessments for this
course, including 1 test
Assessment 1 to 5: 18% each
Test: 10%




4 of the assessments involve observing,
determining and describing the
construction of a building.
1 assessment involves determine, describe
and develop the passive fire systems for an
existing building.
There will be 1 test.
The assessments directly align with the
topics of this course.

These assessments will be due for
submission progressively through
the year.
The first will be given out today.
It is due by April 23rd and covers
“Describing a site”.
“due by” means “must be
submitted before”. You are
welcome to submit assignments
as soon as you are happy with
them and consider them
competent.
The rest of the assessments will
be forthcoming. The due dates
will be notified soon.
You will need to find a commercial/industrial construction site and arrange access to it
for the purposes of observing its construction. But you can do assessment 1 on any
site where a commercial development might be possible.
You may observe more than one site if you wish (and are able) for other reports.
Regardless of the amount of progress already made on the site, assessment 1 should
be completed as though no plans for construction exist yet.
Consider this report to be a feasibility study on the site for future potential
development.
Submit the assessments as a report, and it should meet the standard of a technical
document:
 Produce them in a word processor
 Structure the report with numeric sections and subsections
 Title and reference all images
 If appropriate include other related documents as appendices
If you are unfamiliar with report writing, I have also put a report writing guide onto
Moodle for you to review (and you are also welcome to discuss this with me).
You have already covered site investigations in year one, so I
will dedicate little time to it this year. However I am happy to
remind you of key elements.
When investigating a site consider what would be useful in
developing a building design for the site.
Remember that you are not reflecting on what someone else
should investigate, you are undertaking the investigation.
However, considering what would be useful to you, were you
developing a design for the site, is a good approach:

Would the wind zone it falls in be useful?
 This is “quantitative” information.
 What other quantitative information would be useful?

Would the appearance of the surrounding area be useful?
 This is qualitative information
 What other qualitative information would be useful?

Would what council will allow you to do be useful?
Class activity


Let’s start with understanding how
to describe dimensions
Learning objective: By the end of the
activity, students can confidently
determine, measure and describe
dimensions
Homework




Identify a site or sites for your
assessment(s)
Identify the stakeholder(s)
Connect with the stakeholder(s) and
request for access
Report your progress by next class
That’s all for this afternoon

I hope you enjoyed the class
