Orial,, Joan T. BSE III-B ENGLISH EL 117 LITERARY CRITICSM ACTIVITY 1.Form in as important concept in literary criticism. What does it mean (1) as it used generally in literary studies and (2) as it used specially in formalistic approach? In the literature, form is referred to the style and structure of a literary work while the content refers to the plot, characters, setting, and themes. And as the two of them are inseparable and are the only thing that matter in a literary critic formalistic approach. Whereas the only focus in this is only the work itself, never mind the author, never mind if he or she is a criminal or anything never mind what is the opinions of others in the story just focus on the work and only it. Formalist critics like inspectors and investigators, look closely on the work itself by analyzing various elements of the work as a means of explicating or interpreting a text. The formalistic approach to literature examines a text by its "organic form" - its setting, theme, scene, narrative, image, and symbol, (just like a food connoisseur judging a food.) Some referred it as "a scientific approach to literature," because it advocates methodical and systematic readings of texts. 2.Make an attempt at Formalistic Criticism. IN THE STATION OF THE METRO The apparition of these faces in the crowd. Petals of wet, black bough. ------> Inside of the metro is very dark. There are different shadows and expressions form and faces on the crowd. One of them have petal liked shape wet and sweat. Some is also standing like a bough or branch that is connected on a tree. 3.In Many Philippine schools, teachers teach literature in connection with moral lessons that are supposed to reside in literary works? Would a New Critic approve of such practice? No, as a New Critic he or she one cannot approve. Let just say that extrinsic is the mundane things and is otherworldly desires that anyone can live without but still insist as cannot and intrinsic approach or the formalism is pure and unadulterated one. In short, new critic focuses on the work or an art only and no other more.
