Exercise #2 – Orient a Map
Directions: For each of the problems below, explain how you would orient a map.
1. You are hiking in an urban forest and you are lost. You have a map, but you aren’t sure where you are located
because most of the trail markers are down. You can see that there is a wetland area ahead of you and you can
hear highway traffic on your left.
a. What direction are you headed?
West
b. What trail might you be on?
L3-L4
2. You are in an unfamiliar city and you are lost. You have a city map. Describe how you can determine your
location without using an electronic device.
Using the Legend and the scale in the corner. Also what hear, if you hear or can see and major highway or road
then try and locate one on the map. Every street corner, or stoplight has a street or road sign that has the name
of the street you are on. You can use those to pin point you location and where you need to go.
