Ave., Ermita Manila Page 1 of 2 SHIP SECURITY OFFICERS TRAINING SHIP SECURITY OFFICER TRAINING Course Framework PART A AIMS This training course aims to provide knowledge, understanding and proficiency to those who may be designated to perform the duties and responsibilities of a Ship Security Officer (SSO), as defined in section A/2.1.6 and section A/12.1-2 of the ISPS Code, and in particular the duties and responsibilities with respect to the security of a ship, for implementing and maintaining a ship security plan and for liaising with the Company Security Officer (CSO) and Port Facility Security Officers (PFSOs). OBJECTIVE Those who will successfully complete this course should have knowledge of national – international rules and regulations relevant to Maritime Security, knowledge of past and current security threats and be able to undertake the duties and responsibilities as ship security officer. ENTRY STANDARDS Must satisfy any of the following: a. must be at least an operational level officer b. persons who have previous relevant experience on maritime security matters c. recommended by shipping company to be a Ship Security Officer It is assumed that those attending this course will be serving seafarers (or other shipboard personnel) and are likely to be designated as ship security officer. COURSE CERTIFICATE, DIPLOMA OR DOCUMENT A course certificate following the format will serving by MARINA will be issued to those who have successfully completed this course indicating that the holder has completed a training course for Ship Security Officers. COURSE DELIVERY The course delivery will be conducted using a combination of the lecture method, workshop, group exercises as well as practical drills. COURSE INTAKE The maximum number of trainees should be 24, in a 42 sq. meter room. STAFF REQUIREMENTS The lead instructor is a maritime or naval officer with adequate training and experience in marine security, knowledgeable of the requirements of Chapter XI-2 of SOLAS ’74 as amended including the ISPS Code, and trained in instructional and assessment techniques. Resource persons with expertise in security matters are hired as needed such as in bomb familiarization and identification to lecture on specified topics in close coordination with the lead instructor. All instructors have attended Trainor’s Training Program for Instructors.
